A method of detecting the presence of a subject on a bed has a load detection step, a determination step, and a first information providing step. The load detection step detects loads acting on portions of a lying surface (61) of the bed by first to fourth load detection means (21a, 21b, 21c, 21d), where the portions of the lying surface (61) are a portion on the right side of the head, a portion on the left side of the head, a portion on the right side of the feet, and a portion on the left side of the feet. The determination step determines whether a predetermined determination formula is satisfied or not on the basis of load values (W1, W2, W3, W4) output from the first to fourth load detection means. The first information providing step provides information on the presence of the subject (H) on the bed when it is determined that the formula is satisfied by the result of the determination in the determination step.
