A BCI processes the electroencephalography (EEG) signals to perform feature extraction and then feature translation (classification) to determine if the user intended to perform the action. If the intension was detected the body part is incrementally moved to provide proprioceptive feedback to the user. The feedback process is repeated at a Feedback Update Interval (FUI) of 100ms or less. Preferably a reaction time test is used to determine the optimal FUI for an individual where shorter FUIs used for shorter reaction times. In one embodiment, if the user has slow reaction times, the FUI is initially between 100ms and 1000ms and gradually decreased over a series of sessions until the FUI is less than 100ms.

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based rehabilitation system and method is described in which an auditory or visual stimulus is provided to a user instructing them to imagine performing a physical action with a body part such as a hand during a trial period. A BCI processes the electroencephalography (EEG) signals to perform feature extraction and then feature translation (classification) to determine if the user intended to perform the action. If the intension was detected the body part is incrementally moved to provide proprioceptive feedback to the user. A method for training a subject diagnosed with a stress disorder caused by a trauma , comprising:selecting a challenge expected to trigger a symptom of said stress disorder in said subject;exposing said subject to said challenge;recording electrical signals generated by the brain of said subject by at least one electrode, in conjunction with said exposing;processing said recorded electrical signals to estimate an activation level of at least one specific brain region;presenting at least one indication of said estimated activation level to said subject, wherein said presenting comprises providing feedback to said subject by modifying said challenge according to said activation level of said at least one specific brain region;repeating said recording, said processing and said presenting.2. An EEG monitor with sensors placed to detect signals and analyze the signals to determine if a frequency below 12 Hz, and more particularly between 3 Hz and 8 Hz, called theta waves, are present. Theta waves are generated when the brain is entering a drowsy or sleep mode. The sensors detect brain wave signals and transmit the signals to a microprocessor which analyzes the signals and determines the brain waves being detected. The brain waves are continuously monitored and the data is continuously transmitted to a microprocessor. If brain waves are detected in the predetermined range of between 3 Hz and 8 Hz the microprocessor activates a stimulus, to wake up the person wearing the device. A method and apparatus for forecasting and controlling neurological abnormalities in humans such as seizures or other brain disturbances. The system is based on a multi-level control strategy. Using as inputs one or more types of physiological measures such as brain electrical, chemical or magnetic activity, heart rate, pupil dilation, eye movement, temperature, chemical concentration of certain substances, a feature set is selected off-line from a pre-programmed feature library contained in a high level controller within a supervisory control architecture. This high level controller stores the feature library within a notebook or external PC. The supervisory control also contains a knowledge base that is continuously updated at discrete steps with the feedback information coming from an implantable device where the selected feature set (feature vector) is implemented. This high level controller also establishes the initial system settings (off-line) and subsequent settings (on-line) or tunings through an outer control loop by an intelligent procedure that incorporates knowledge as it arises. The subsequent adaptive settings for the system are determined in conjunction with a low-level controller that resides within the implantable device. The device has the capabilities of forecasting brain disturbances, controlling the disturbances, or both. Forecasting is achieved by indicating the probability of an oncoming seizure within one or more time frames, which is accomplished through an inner-loop control law and a feedback necessary to prevent or control the neurological event by either electrical, chemical, cognitive, sensory, and/or magnetic stimulation.
