The present invention involves a surgical monitoring system and method for modeling surgical procedures. A multi-element fiducial reference pattern observable by a tracker may be transferred directly to the skin proximate the surgical site, either through a stencil as a radio-opaque ink pattern or via transfer tape, or may be applied in prepared form on a surgical incise film. Alternatively the surgical incise film may be applied over the surgical site and the inked reference pattern applied to the film before surgery. A controller determines the three-dimensional location and orientation of the surgical site by comparing the position and orientation of the reference pattern in a prior scan with the position and orientation of the reference pattern in image information about the surgical site obtained from the tracker. The system may track the movement of instruments relative to the surgical site, or may be used to track changes in the surgical site itself.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for treating teeth associated with tooth structure removal and disinfection, in particular for endodontic procedures such as root canal tissue removal and decay treatment. Traditional methods involve the use of files, reamers, chemicals, drills, and burs, which have many disadvantages. The disclosed method and apparatus are based on the use of micro-tornado forces generated in a small working head attached to a dental hand piece and discharged from an extended cannula into a root canal orifice or a cavity to abrade, cut, and remove the content. 1. A dental instrument , comprising a working head that generates micro-tornado forces , wherein the working head comprises:(a) a fluid inlet;(b) one or more orifices configured to intensify the linear velocity of the fluid;(c) a vortexing chamber configured to convert the linear velocity of the fluid to a rotational velocity of at least 6,000 rpm; and(d) a cannula at the distal end of the working head fluidly connected to the vortexing chamber.2. The dental instrument of claim 1 , wherein the fluid is pressurized air comprising abrasive powder or fluid particles suspended therein.3. The dental instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a source of negative pressure beyond the end of the cannula.4. In an exemplary embodiment, a method of creating an impression of structures of the human oral cavity comprises: preparing impression trays: creating a first, or base, impression; grinding out portions of the base impression; and using the void(s) in the ground out base impression to take a second, or wash, impression. The base impression is taken with an excess of a high-density impression material which is positioned to extend beyond the structures of interest (of which the impression is being taken). A dental apparatus comprising:an internal chamber;a fluid inlet in fluid communication with the internal chamber, the fluid inlet configured to direct a treatment liquid into the internal chamber onto an internal surface to impart rotation to the treatment liquid in the internal chamber;an exit hole in fluid communication with the internal chamber, the exit hole configured to convey the rotating treatment liquid to a treatment region of a tooth; andan aperture in fluid communication with the treatment region, the aperture configured to connect to a pump to exert a suction force to remove liquid from the treatment region.3. The dental apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the fluid inlet is oriented to inject liquid horizontally into the internal chamber and onto the internal surface claim 2 , the internal surface configured to impart rotation to the injected liquid and to redirect the rotating liquid in a downward direction through the exit hole to treat the treatment region of the tooth.4. A dental drill is disclosed which allows for an osteotomy to be formed in a shape which closely matches the cylindrical shape of many dental implants. In so doing, the implant engages more tissue of the resulting osteotomy, thus resulting in greater ability for the tissue to penetrate and fuse with the implant while also reducing the chances of infection and reducing the overall recovery time. A retrievable detent-retained dental prosthesis assembly comprising:a. a flanged intraradicular anchor portion wherein the anchor portion comprises an elongated member having a distal closed tapered end and an open proximal end defining an axially extending bore therein, configured to releasably engage a detent-retained dental prosthesis;b. a detent comprising a head portion and a body portion configured to be releasably coupled to the anchor; andc. a collar operably coupled to the detent, the collar having a bore axially extending therethrough and configured to receive the body portion of the detent while preventing passage of the detent head portion.2.
