APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR SECURING A DENTAL APPLIANCE

Apparatus and related methods for securing a dental appliance to the teeth are disclosed herein. In various aspects, the dental appliance includes arms disposed about a base to secure the dental appliance in a removable fashion to the teeth of the user. The arms, in various aspects, are biased about the teeth thereby securing the dental appliance to the teeth. Associated methods of use are also disclosed herein.

TOOTH WHITENING DEVICE

The invention is a locally mounted light source for light activation of tooth whitening compositions. A support in the form of a bridge attached to a retractor or as part of a mouth guard has integral therewith, a small and lightweight light source, such as could be provided by one or more high-intensity LED's, though other light sources could be used. The light source may be in the form of an array, powered by either a direct electrical connection to a power supply or by battery power, for example, with a battery pack worn by the user. The light source is thus located in proximity to the tooth surfaces regardless of head movement or orientation, increasing user mobility and comfort.

Intraoral device

An intraoral device includes a one-piece, flexible, injection molded body made of a single homogeneous material. The body includes upper front and rear flaps, and lower front and rear flaps. Upper edges of the front flaps and lower edges of the lower flaps are sealed by respective upper and lower parts of a patient's mouth to form upper and lower evacuation channels when the body is disposed within the patient's mouth. Evacuation holes in the flaps are in communication with the evacuation channels. A connection section is in communication with the evacuation channels and is configured to extend outside of the patient's mouth to connect with a vacuum source for evacuating fluid from the patient's mouth through the evacuation holes and the evacuation channels.

MOUTH GUARD

Mouth guards of varying designs. The mouth guard is generally moldable and has non-planar biting surfaces. In other embodiments, the mouth guard has base members or flanges that have means for retaining medicaments and the like. Other versions have thermochromic elements selected to allow color changes at desired temperatures.

A raised front edge can protect the lips and separate in place about the opening to the mouthpiece. Whitening agents can be used to enhance the whitening effect so that ultraviolet light and heat source such as the sun or a sunlamp is all that it is needed. Reflective inner walls in the mouthpiece can magnify light to the teeth. The mouthpiece can include bite tables, and the side walls of the mouthpiece can be inwardly flared and funnel shaped for focusing and magnifying incoming light and heat. The present invention relates to a retracting device for retracting at least a portion of a user's mouth. A cheek and lip retractor for dentistry comprises respective cheek portions and lip portions for the upper and lower lips. WEDGE

A dental wedge for propping open the mouth of a patient to facilitate oral examination and/or treatment comprises an elongate portion (1) which, in use, is inserted between the jaws of a patient. The wedge further comprises a pair of oppositely directed flanges (2a and 2b) extending laterally from the elongate portion (1) at or near the distal end of the latter. A sheet of material having a central body portion with attached wings capable of folding towards each other on either side. The wings of the bite block fold toward each other along fold lines adjacent the central body portion and provide a structure for biting down upon for propping the mouth of a patient open during a dental procedure. A mirrored surface may be placed on the central body portion for improving visibility in the mouth. In a unilateral bite block embodiment, the unilateral bite block is placed in only one side of the mouth. TONGUE RETAINING ORAL APPLIANCE

An oral appliance includes a frame for mounting to a user's teeth and a tongue contacting retaining member extending from the frame and configured in use to limit movement of the tongue toward the user's throat when the user is exercising or sleeping to maintain an open air passageway. The retaining member is positioned relative to the frame such that in use the retaining member contacts the tongue in a zone behind the second molars and in front of the pharyngeal reflex region of the tongue. The mouthguard of the present invention is provided with at least one recess in its base to receive a projection of a tool. The tool being made from a material which retains its shape at a temperature when the material of the mouthguard is ductile and susceptible to remoulding. Intra-oral device for protecting oral tissues during radiation treatment

An intra-oral device for positioning oral tissues during medical treatment, for example, radiation treatment. The device includes upper and lower dental arch members configured to engage the maxillary and mandibular teeth or edentulous arch(es) of a patient, respectively. The upper and lower dental arch members are operatively coupled to provide a dental arch assembly. A protective element to displace or depress a patient's tongue is secured at a suitable working position with respect to the dental arch assembly. In an embodiment, provision is made for three-dimensional spatial adjustment of the protective element to a desired location, at least during initial fitting and assembly. The device is then secured to allow consistent repetition of the oral tissue positioning from treatment to treatment. The protective element may be configured to engage the tongue of a patient so that the tongue may be selectively positioned for treatment and/or diagnostic procedures.

The bite guides are spaced apart so a subject biting on the guides opens the oral cavity to inspection through the opening. The mount is disposed on an anterior side of the mouthpiece; and has a flange to engage and slide along the opening and an optical path for light to pass through the mount and mouthpiece. A clip on an anterior side of the mount is configured to removeably hold a camera to record light passing through the optical path from the posterior side of the mount. A laminated mouth guard may include a shape memory layer, one or more of a cushion layer and a puncture resistant layer, and an adhesive layer. The inventive retractor includes two half-moon shaped trays at each side located on the sides of the mouth covering the lips and opening the mouth to reveal the teeth from the front. The trays are interconnected by a strap-like member spacing the upper and lower teeth from one another by a slight amount. The angulation between the trays and the strap-like member is devised to improve the patient's comfort level and to better facilitate alignment of the retractor with typical human oral anatomy. The present invention relates to a device and method of treating temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and bruxism by placement in the mouth of an individual with a dental mouth guard to produce a minor irritation of the palate of a person suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and bruxism through one or more irritation teeth or spines that mildly irritate the palate of a wearer when tooth grinding or maxillary pressure occurs. The mouth guard includes an irritation plate and a tooth molding for placement and fitting to a patient's upper dentition. The irritation plate employs irritation spikes whereupon commencing of tooth grinding initiate minor irritation to the palate of a wearer wherein, the wearer is alerted to the occurrence of tooth grinding, whether the wearer is sleeping or awake. In particular, in alternative embodiments, the invention provides a combined bite block/airway/tongue depressor appliance. In alternative embodiments, appliances of the invention are used in an individual, e.g., an anesthetized patient or a patient having an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), to maintain the airway. In alternative embodiments, appliances of the invention have a bite block and tongue depressor sufficiently asymmetrically positioned in the left- or the right-hand side of the mouth to allow additional positioning of a medical or visualizing device or an endotracheal tube into the mouth, the oral cavity, larynx or esophagus.

Oral Cavity Suction Device

A disposable saliva ejector made by a simplified manufacturing design that utilizes a single planar, double leaf shaped plate design that is embossed on the inner faces of the leaf plates with a series of arced ribs and then folded about its midpoint. A tab and slot arrangement joins the two plates such that the distal and proximal tips meet and can be held in operational contact by the suction forces passed through the device and via a tab and slot arrangement. The arced ribs then form a series of channels that are equally spaced about perimeter of the device. A trough runs along the linear axis of both of the plates to direct any fluid and debris that is sucked into the channels into a connected suction tube. An oral cavity suction system that incorporates a disposable saliva ejector residing along the interior of the patient's cheek that utilizes a single planar, double leaf shaped plate design that is embossed on their inner faces with a series of arced ribs and folded about its midpoint. The present invention is a dental oral appliance to open the airway for a sleeping individual who suffers with snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. The appliance includes a base to secure the appliance within the mouth for the individual. Typically, the base will fit over and secure to the lower teeth of the individual. The appliance also includes a tongue restraining device connected to the base. The tongue restraining device has a substantial breach formed therein to permit movement of the tongue so that the user can more easily swallow saliva. A ramp might also be attached to the anterior portion of the base to advance the mandible.

Oral mouthpiece and method for the use thereof

An oral device, or mouthpiece, for delivering a fluid to the mouth or oropharynx of a user includes an intraoral portion and an extraoral portion, which may be integrally formed. In various embodiments, the oral device may be configured with ear loops. A dental appliance to reduce the effect of facial age lines has a U-shaped planar part or piece with a curved central part and two generally straight leg parts extending therefrom. The planar piece has an upper surface that is continuous and generally unobstructed. A lower surface of the planar piece has an elongated flap that extends along the outer edge of each leg of the planar piece and engages the outer sides of the lower teeth of the user so as to align the appliance during fitting and use. The lower surface is continuous and generally unobstructed, except for the flap. Bite pads are located on the upper and lower surfaces of both legs in the unobstructed areas.
