Then the fusion device is pushed between the articular surfaces and mechanical vibration, in particular ultrasonic vibration, is applied to the proximal face ( 4 ) of the fusion device. Thereby the liquefiable material is liquefied where in contact with the bone tissue and penetrates into the bone tissue, where after re-solidification it constitutes a positive fit connection between the fusion device and the bone tissue.

Systems for bone fracture repair are disclosed. One system includes a biocompatible putty that may be packed about a bone fracture to provide full loadbearing capabilities within days. The disclosed putties create an osteoconductive scaffold for bone regeneration and degrade over time to harmless 5 resorbable byproducts. Fixation devices for contacting an endosteal wall of an intramedullary (IM) canal of a fractured bone are also disclosed. One such fixation device includes a woven elongated structure fabricated from resorbable polymer filaments. The woven elongated structure has resilient properties that allow the woven 10 structure to be radially compressed and delivered to the IM canal using an insertion tube. When the insertion tube is removed, the woven structure expands towards its relaxed cross-sectional width to engage the endosteal wall. The woven elongated structure is impregnated with a resorbable polymer resin that cures in situ, or in the IM canal.

The angular position of the housing ( 20 ) about the first and second axes ( 24,32 ) is indicated by the position of the first indicator ( 22 ) relative to the second indicator ( 26 ). In a second embodiment the housing ( 2 ) comprises a cavity filled with a fluid. A method of performing a knee replacement procedure in an individual in need thereof. The method comprises preparing the distal end of the individual's femur to receive a femoral component of a knee prosthesis. The preparation includes resecting a proximal surface and a distal surface of a medial and/or lateral condyle of the femur, determining the amount of uncut bone left between said resected proximal and distal surfaces after said resection, and then determining, from the amount of uncut bone, a pre-operative, natural profile of a trochlear groove between the medial and lateral condyles of the individual's femur. A selection of femoral components can then be provided with the one selected preferably having medial and lateral condyle components and a trochlear section therebetween that has a profile which substantially matches the natural profile of the trochlear groove of the individual. Knee prostheses components and kits are also provided.

A device for performing a surgical procedure on a knee includes an adjustable femoral portion, a tibial portion and at least one sensor coupled with the femoral and/or tibial portions to sense pressure exerted by the femoral and tibial portions against one another. The femoral portion is adapted for removably coupling with a distal end of a femur to adjust tension in soft tissue adjacent the knee and has at least one positioning feature adapted to move relative to the distal end of the femur as the femoral portion is adjusted, thus helping position a femoral prosthetic on the distal end of the femur. The sensor(s) may be adapted to sense pressure at medial and lateral sides of the knee, and relative pressures may be displayed as data on a visual display. Adjustments to the femoral member may be made to balance pressure at flexion and extension of the knee.

Regarding semi-constrained artificial ball (head) and socket (cup) joints such as the hip or shoulder joint, which allow for certain numbers of degrees of rotation along three independent axes. For example, one embodiment creates at least two axes of rotation through a super-spherical space carved out of the inner surface of the cup, with a cup-cable connecting two points along the super-spherical space, and a perpendicular head-cable looping around the head and the cup-cable within the super-spherical space, and with the head-cable residing in a groove. Another embodiment creates two axes of rotation through a combination of a 1) swivel with lever and/or 2) cable attached to a circular track (with the knob or ring around cable facing inward or outward), both of which have the center of the head as the center of rotation. The third axis may be created by a horizontal swivel and by wiggle room.
