An orthopaedic fixation assembly for prosthetic biologic attachment. The orthopaedic fixation assembly may include a main body with a longitudinally-extending stem having a proximal end, a distal end, and a cavity body. An anchor plug may be configured to be received within the stem cavity, and securable thereto via complementary mating surfaces. A spindle structure may be fixedly attached to the proximal end of the longitudinally-extending stem and protrude outwardly therefrom such that a portion of the structure extends externally beyond the resected cavity of the bone that may prevent rotational motion of the spindle. The spindle structure may have at least one compliant biasing member configured to apply a compressive force to the surrounding bone. A porous coating may be at the juncture between stem and spindle structure, on the spindle, and the splines and anti-rotation chocks, improving the initial stability of the implant and facilitating long-term bone ingrowth.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CEMENTING INTRAMEDUALLY BONE PROSTHESIS

An intramedullary bone prosthesis to be rigidly cemented into position in the femur, and also applicable to total knee and shoulder replacement operations, is provided as an improved surgical technique. The prosthesis is composed of a femoral head base, a femoral head post, a long femoral stem, a cement canal along its longitudinal axis, a spacer, a collar, and a distal restrictor. The prosthesis is placed into the prepared medullary canal. With collar in position, a bone cement injector is readily threaded on to the proximal portion of the cement canal. Cement is injected and subsequently travels down through the canal, through the spacer, and eventually exits openings at the bottom of the spacer. The distal restrictor plug halts downward cement travel, thus initiating an upward, retrograde filling of the void in between the prosthesis and the cancellous bone wall. The cement reaches the collar or cement restrictor, thus proximally dislodging all air bubbles, blood, and blood products.

Method and apparatus for affixing a prosthesis to bone wherein stresses are transferred form the prosthesis to hard bone in a manner which corresponds to the stress transfers which occur in natural bone. The apparatus comprises a body (18) having an outer surface at least a portion of which is contoured to mate with a portion of the inner surface of the hard bone to which the prosthesis is being affixed so that, in the region of said mating portions, a substantial fraction of the hard bone is in close proximity to or in contact with the outer surface of the body, said outer surface (22) in said mating region being textured (46) to increase the frictional engagement of the surface with the hard bone. In certain preferred embodiment of the invention, a prosthesis made from a titanium-containing material and having high overall strength and flexibility is provided which includes a portion having a coating of porous metal into which bone can grow.

ABSTRACT A modular hip prosthesis can be custom fitted to a particular patient by a surgeon prior to surgical insertion comprising (i) a prosthesis a body having a neck portion for carrying a rounded head element, a transitional mid-section of the prosthesis body and a stem section and (ii) means attachable to the prosthesis body to adjust and maintain the prosthesis in load bearing engagement with the femur. A tubular extension sleeve to the stem may have an open end portion to receive the stem body. The stem may also include an integral bore, and an attachment in the form of an elonagated screw is provided for connection to the stem internal bore for securing the extension sleeve and the prosthesis body together, forming a compressive sealed connection therebetween. Pads can be attached to the transitional mid-section of the prosthesis body for increasing the cross-sectional shape of the prosthesis at the transitional mid-section. Removable collars can be added to the prosthesis to form a transverse load carrying interface with the upper end of the patient's femur. Frustro-conically shaped extension sleeves can be added to the prosthesis neck for extending the neck length.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Metal prosthetic devices having stems implantable in bone are known, the stem of each such device extending from a collar surface designed to bear against the cut surface of the bone. In this invention, an interpositioning collar made from a material having a low modulus of elasticity is provided which can be fitted onto the stem and be partially implanted therewith to improve the joint between the cut bone surface and the collar sur-face of the prosthetic device, as well as the joint between the im-planted stem and the adjacent bone portions. The interpositioning collar consists of a flat elongated, lengthwise tapered collar element which may be either O-shaped or U-shaped and a flange which is U-shaped and extends perpendicularly from the lower face of the collar element. In use, the collar element and flange em-brace the implanted stem of the prosthetic device, the collar ele-ment lying immediately below the collar of the prosthetic device and flat on the cut surface of the bone, with the flange extend ing into the bone alongside a topmost portion of the stem.

A method and apparatus for centering the stem of a femoral hip prosthesis in the cavity formed in the medullary canal in the proximal end of the femur. The apparatus includes a sleeve or other like device which is mounted onto the neck of the femoral hip prosthesis and which contains at least two projections extending from a lower surface thereof which are adapted to seat in correspondingly formed slots disposed on the upper proximal surface of the femur bone. The slots are positioned such that when the projections reside therein, the stem is centered within the cavity. The slots and projections are elongated in a direction generally transverse to the direction of elongation of the stem, and in this direction of elongation each slot and associated projection is not parallel to the other slot and associated projection. The device of this invention may be used either with prosthesis having a collar, or with a collarless prosthesis. The method of this invention includes the step of mounting a sleeve or other like device on the neck of a femoral hip prosthesis and inserting projections on the device into previously formed slots disposed on the upper proximal surface of the femur bone.
