At proximal end, actuation tool can connect to drive shaft where drive shaft extends through an opening in body. Drive shaft can extend out of an opening at distal end to engage a worm gear, drive shaft, or other actuation member of distractible device. Securing shaft can engage the device to stabilize the device during distraction. Activation of the actuation member rotates the drive shaft, which expands the distractible device.

A method of using an interbody spinal implant by implanting the spinal implant into a patient in need of the spinal implant. The method includes accessing the disc space of the patient and locating the center of the disc space. The disc space is incised by making a window in the annulus of the disc space for insertion of the spinal implant. The endplates are cleaned of all cartilage and the disc structure, which is encapsulated by the annulus, is removed while avoiding damage to the endplate structure of the vertebrae. Optionally a size-specific rasp is selected and the disc space is cleared of all soft tissue and cartilage. Optionally the disc space is distracted by sequentially expanding it with distractors of progressively increasing heights. A spinal implant having a pre-determined size sufficient to balance frictional fit and elongation of the annulus is selected and seated in the disc space.

An implant of this invention both repositions adjacent vertebrae and remains in situ to maintain the new position. The implant has two halves which are interlocked such that they can slide horizontally with respect to each other. Movement of the implant halves and their respective positions are controlled by set screw within the implant. The implant includes radial anchors which fit into alignment slots made in the misaligned vertebra by the disclosed method. The set screws are used to advance the halves of the implant which in turn move the misaligned vertebrae back into correct positions. The correct position of the vertebrae is locked in place through a nut and a plate.

First and second slides, each having ramps with an inclined surface are engaged with the cams of the endplate. The first slide has an angled portion at an end, and the second slide has a hinge portion. A threaded shaft has a hinge portion connected to the slide hinge portion, connecting the shaft to the slide, enabling the shaft to pivot. A nut is threaded to the shaft, and can contact and interfere with the angled portion of the first slide to drive the first slide with respect to the second slide. The invention is a subtalar implantable to expand after implantation. The subtalar implant has two or more expansion segments or wings. In all forms, the expansion wings are hinged on the distal portion of the subtalar implant which causes only the proximal portion of the wing to expand relative to the midplane of the implant. The expansion wings and the entire subtalar implant are threaded to prevent the implant from backing out of the sinus tarsi once implanted.
