In another embodiment, stiffeners added to the resilient ankle member increase the stiffness on the lateral side relative to the medial side. In certain other embodiments, the foot provides progressively increasing support from mid stance through toe off. For example, a gap between the resilient ankle member and the lower element closes during the later portion of the wearer's gait. The closing gap increases a contact area between the resilient ankle member and the lower element, providing progressively increasing support.

In another embodiment, stiffeners added to the resilient ankle member increase the stiffness on the lateral side relative to the medial side. In certain other embodiments, the foot provides progressively increasing support from mid stance through toe off. The closing gap increases a contact area between the resilient ankle member and the lower element, providing progressively increasing support. Femoral shank of hip prosthesis has anterior (15) and posterior faces which taper inwards at an angle of some 3 degrees in the metaphysis section (2a) and then diverge at a similar angle from the base of the metaphysis section to the tip of the shank. The upper ends of the anterior and posterior faces have zones, extending between their lengthwise axes and inner edges, which are shaped to form projecting nodules (20). In addition, the diaphysis section (2b) of the shank has internal and external faces which converge towards the tip, where they are convex in shape and have a radius of curvature of about 8 mm. The metaphysis section and proximal zone of the diaphysis section of the shank have a coating of aluminium and calcium hydroxyapatite, while the rest of the diaphysis section is coated with aluminium only.

The implant, designed to replace an earlier one which has become unstable after a number of years due to bone degradation, consists of a first section (2) with a cavity to receive the head of the femoral prosthesis, and a second section (3) covering the surrounding bone tissue that has become degraded. The first section is dome-shaped and at least partially hemispherical, with a radius more or less the same as that of the original implant, while the second section is in the shape of a fin covering a large part of the degraded bone area. The fin extends radially from the first section and at an angle of 15 - 25 degrees to the plane of the open side of the dome. On the opposite side to the fin the implant has a hook (4) to engage with the pelvic bone aperture.

A femoral augment, or set of augments, for use with a knee joint prosthesis, where the femoral augment includes a main body portion, an aperture formed within the main body portion and extending in a generally distal/proximal direction, and a pair of legs extending outwardly from said main body portion in a generally posterior direction. In the preferred embodiment, the aperture is configured to receive a stem extension implant, and to allow it to pass through. Additionally, the legs of the femoral augment are preferably configured to be seated proximal of a proximal side of a pair of condylar portions of a femoral component of a knee joint prosthesis. A method described herein may include preoperative planning in which a template including a grid coordinate system is used, which advantageously provides an intuitive system for the surgeon both preoperatively and during surgery.

The present foot prosthesis includes various structural features that provide the foot with advantageous rollover properties. In certain embodiments, the foot guides rollover toward the medial side. For example, an asymmetrical upper element and a correspondingly shaped resilient ankle member support more of the wearer's weight on the lateral side as the foot rolls over. In another embodiment, stiffeners added to the resilient ankle member increase the stiffness on the lateral side relative to the medial side. In certain other embodiments, the foot provides progressively increasing support from mid stance through toe off. For example, a gap between the resilient ankle member and the lower element closes during the later portion of the wearer's gait. The closing gap increases a contact area between the resilient ankle member and the lower element, providing progressively increasing support. In another embodiment, the foot includes a gap between a lower front edge of an attachment adapter and the upper element. The gap may be filled with a resilient material.
