Methods and apparatus for manufacturing objects having optimized response characteristics

Номер: US20120165967A1
Автор: James A. St. Ville
Принадлежит: Aztec IP Co LLC

A method for manufacturing an object having a potential {x} which is generated in response to a field {f} applied thereto is provided. The method includes the step of designing a geometric model of the object. A computerized mathematical model of the object is generated by discretizing the geometric model of the object into a plurality of finite elements and defining nodes at boundaries of the elements, wherein values of the field {f} and potential {x} are specified at the nodes. A material property matrix [k] is then calculated based on the relationship {f}=[k] {x}. Material property coefficients are then extracted from the material property matrix [k] for each finite element in the computerized mathematical model and the extracted material property coefficients are compared to material property coefficients for known materials to match the extracted material property coefficients to the material property coefficients for known materials. Manufacturing parameters corresponding to the matched material property coefficients are then determined. The object is then manufactured in accordance with the determined manufacturing parameters.

Disclosed are methods and systems to determine proper seating engagement of a first orthopedic component with a second orthopedic component to ensure stability of the assembled implant. In an example, the first orthopedic component is a head for a shoulder or hip prosthesis and the second orthopedic component is a stem for the shoulder or hip prosthesis, and the head and stem can be attached via a taper junction. The methods and systems can include contacting the first or second orthopedic component to excite the first or second orthopedic component and generate a measurable response, and evaluating the measured response to determine whether the first orthopedic component is properly seated with the second orthopedic component. In an example, a tooling component can physically contact the first or second orthopedic component and generate a vibrational response. The same tooling component or a second tooling component can include one or more sensors to measure the vibrational response and provide an output to the user.

Surgical tools which are used to separate from one another a femoral cup and an acetabular ball in an implanted hip replacement prosthesis. At its distal end, elements of the surgical tool engage the femoral cup and the acetabular cup. When proximal handles of the tool are squeezed toward one another, the engagement elements move away from one another. Thus, a surgeon is able to separate the femoral cup and the accetabular ball from one another without pulling the acetabular cup away from the acetabulum or the femoral cup and/or femoral implant away from the femur, thereby accomplishing the separation without disrupting any bone ingrowth.

Принадлежит: CERAMTEC GMBH

A spacer comprised of individual components as joint replacement in the arthroplasty of shoulder, knee, and hip for the temporary surgical care of infections in the joint. The problems addressed by the invention are those of avoiding an adhesion of the bone to the spacer and a release of wear products, achieving that the patient does substantially not experience any mobility restriction, and keeping the wear and tear of the spacer as little as possible. These problems are solved in that at least one component of the spacer is made of a ceramic material, of a plurality of ceramic materials, or of a non-ceramic material having a ceramic coating. 1. A spacer having individual components as a joint replacement in the arthroplasty of the shoulder , knee and hip for the temporary surgical care of infections in the joint , characterized in that the spacer comprises at least one component that is composed of one or more ceramic substances or of a non-ceramic substance with a ceramic coating.2. The spacer according to claim 1 , wherein all exposed surfaces of the at least one ceramic component that are in contact with biological tissue are polished or processed such that their surface roughness Ra is less than 0.35 μm.3. The spacer according to claim 1 , wherein at least some regions of the at least one ceramic component have a coating or multiple coatings with one or more antibiotic agents.4. The spacer according to for a joint replacement in the arthroplasty of the hip and the shoulder claim 1 , wherein the spacer consists of a ceramic stem with a projecting retainer element claim 1 , a metallic sleeve being attached to said retainer element claim 1 , and a ceramic ball head being anchored to the sleeve.5. A spacer according to claim 4 , wherein the coupling between the stem and sleeve and between the sleeve and ball head is preferably established by a conical clamping connection claim 4 , or the coupling between the stem and sleeve is established as a clamping connection ...

PROXIMALLY FITTING FEMORAL COMPONENT WITH ADJUNCTIVE SCREW FIXATION

Номер: US20200352725A1
Принадлежит:

The proximally fitting femoral component with adjunctive fixation screws replaces a natural femoral head and proximal femur of a patient during a partial or total hip replacement. The femoral component includes an intramedullary stem having a proximal portion and a distal portion, a neck extending from the proximal portion, and a ball removably attached to a tip end of the neck, the ball forming a ball and socket joint with the acetabular cup of a hip prosthesis. Fixation screws may be installed in the proximal portion of the stem for added rotational and axial stability when necessary. An alignment device is removably attachable to the femoral component for aligning screw holes in cortical bone of the femur with holes or bores in the proximal portion of the stem. The fixation screws may extend in an anterior posterior or medial-lateral plane. 1. A proximally fitting femoral component with adjunctive fixation screws in combination with an alignment tool , comprising:an intramedullary stem having a proximal portion and a distal portion extending from the proximal portion, wherein the proximal portion has a terminal portion, the stem being dimensioned and configured for insertion into a medullary cavity of a femur with the proximal portion press fit in the cavity, the proximal portion having at least one transverse bore defined therein adapted for receiving a screw fixing the stem to cortical bone of the femur, wherein the intramedullary stem has an anterior face and an opposing posterior face, the at least one transverse bore extending anterior-posterior;a neck extending from the terminal portion of the proximal portion of the stem at an oblique angle, the neck having a proximal end and a distal end, a trochanteric eminence formed at the junction between the distal end of the neck and the terminal portion of the proximal portion of the intramedullary stem, wherein the trochanteric eminence has a recess defined at a proximal most end of the proximal end of the neck ...
