The present invention relates to an absorbent article such as a sanitary napkin having an absorbent means and an actual nonabsorbent elastic layer adjacent the absorbent means. The absorbent means has sufficient rigidity to prevent twisting of the absorbent article during use. Sufficient elasticity is provided to prevent folding during use of the elastic layer. As a result, the absorbent article prevents both twisting and folding. Absorbent articles have varying bands in thickness, stiffness and absorbency. The central absorption zone is the thickest, larger absorbent than the other zones, and more rigid than the other zones. Adjacent zones are thinner (calipers), less absorbent and more rigid. In the vicinity of the outer edge, the peripheral zone has the thinnest (caliper) thickness, the smallest absorbency, and the smallest rigidity.
