A fixation device for a knee replacement. The fixation device includes a stem configured to be fixedly attached to one of a tibial component of the knee replacement and a femoral component of the knee replacement. The stem has a continuously tapered outer surface and has a distal end that is distal to said one of the tibial component and the femoral component. A tapered projection is positioned on the continuously tapered outer surface and is tapered in the same direction as the continuously tapered outer surface. The strength of bone implant attached to a bone is improved by using hybrid inserts which have stems and wings having bone ingrowth surface features and caps having outer surfaces of cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The stems and wings of the hybrid inserts are inserted into living bone and the bone implant is attached to the hybrid inserts with PMMA cement. Over time, the bone grows into the bone ingrowth surface features. The bone ingrowth strengthens the bonding of the hybrid inserts and the bone implant with the bone over time. The hybrid inserts increase the shear, tensile and torque strength of the bone implants. Bone inserts that do not have ingrowth surface features loosen over time. 1. A hybrid bone insert comprising:an elongated stem having outer surfaces that have bone ingrowth features wherein the elongated stem is adapted to be inserted into a living bone and over time the living bone grows into the bone ingrowth features on the elongated stem; anda cap attached to the elongated stem, wherein outer surface of the cap are formed from cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) wherein the cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) forms a bond with liquid PMMA applied over the cap.2. The root system comprises an outer component that adheres to the jawbone and possesses a similar modulus of elasticity thus capable of transmitting masticatory stresses along its interface with the bone without excessive stress concentrations and an intermediate component adhering tightly to both the core component and the outer component and having a much lower modulus of elasticity than either the core com-ponent and the outer component. The longitudinal movement of the core component causes the oblique or diagonal stretch-ing of the intermediate component which pulls or applies a force on the outer component which tends to contract it and creates tensile stresses in the portions of the supporting jawbone which interface with the outer component. Such tensile stresses cause bone deposition and stabilize the implant further.

The hybrid inserts increase the shear, tensile and torque strength of the bone implants. Bone inserts that do not have ingrowth surface features loosen over time.

The present invention provides a method and device for restoring individual patient joint kinematics using minimally invasive surgical procedures. The instrumentation of the invention sculpts the articular surface of a first bone that normally articulates in a predetermined manner with a second bone.
