As shown in FIG. 1 the exercise machine of the preferred embodiments includes a mechanical force input interface 1 designed to interface with a user 5 and allow the user 5 to input force 4 into the exercise machine; a force resistor 2 that functions to resist force input into the mechanical force input interface 1 by a user 5 ; and a trigger mechanism 3 that functions to cause a sudden change in the resistance provided against the force input 4 by the user 5 . The exercise machine of the preferred embodiments is designed to exercise muscles in a way that improves muscle speed, explosiveness, or both. Sudden is defined by the Oxford dictionary as “occurring or done quickly and unexpectedly or without warning”—given human reaction times of roughly 500 milliseconds the force reduction is expected to take place in under roughly 500 milliseconds. This is only described as a minimum effective time for sudden operation, not to provide an optimal range of operation. The reduction in force should take place quickly enough that the user will not easily react and reduce their force output, which would be roughly under 500 milliseconds. This exercise machine is does not operate in the same mode or with similarities to a spotting device or machine.
