Adaptive ski system for connecting two skis together

An adaptive ski system can interconnect two skis together while still providing a range of motion of the skis relative to one another. The ski system includes one or two interconnection devices mounted between a pair of skis. The interconnection devices can mount in various locations on the front and/or rear of the skis in any set of mounting holes selected from a plurality of sets of mounting holes. The interconnection devices include a mounting bracket on each ski. A cross bar connects the mounting brackets, thereby interconnecting the skis, such that relative range of motion between the skis both up and down and side-to-side is possible. The interconnection devices quickly connect and disconnect from the skis. The resulting ski system enables a high degree of personal adaption for the needs individual skier.

Non-Newtonian materials exhibit rate-sensitive characteristics, with stress vs. strain properties dependent on the rate of loading. The snowsports device with non-Newtonian materials has variable stiffness and damping, with both increasing according to an increased applied load-rate such that a single snowsports device exhibits soft flex characteristics under low applied load-rates, but stiffer flex characteristics under high applied load-rates. The flex of the snowsports device is self-adjusting, with no manual adjustment input required by a user. The non-Newtonian material may be incorporated into the structure of the snowsports device in a number of different ways, including in the core, in composite sheet layers, and other locations. 1. A composite torsion box core for a snowboard comprises a center core member of lightweight wood or foam enveloped within a composite of a seamless, large diameter tubular sock. By expanding or compressing the length of the large diameter tubular sock during fabrication, the alignment of fibers within the sock is adjusted for programming a desired longitudinal and torsional rigidity relationship for the snowboard. Furthermore, side members, comprising separate composite torsion box cores having smaller diameter tubular socks, are disposed on opposite sides of the center core member and provide increased side strength for the overall torsion box core for enhancing the snowboard's edging strength without compromising torsional flexibility. Plural side members of various materials, sizes and spacing relative to each other are employed to provide snowboards having differing ride characteristics.

In a preferred form, a multi-functional epoxy is applied to bond the inner surface of the composite laminate to the core. In a further form of the invention at least the tip, and preferably also the tail of the core are formed from composite inserts, and at least the tip section of the outer laminate is cut in a herringbone pattern to be wrapped around a curved/angled tip without stress cracking. The invention also comprises a method for making a ski structure as described.

Though the sport of snowboarding is not new, it has taken many years to understand the specific characteristics which are required for making snowboards. There is better understanding of the dynamic bending properties needed for current riders, especially for the competition driven rider whose demands require boards with different tip, tail and middle characteristics. Early snowboard designers understood the use of snowboards as articles for gliding down a snow covered slope making long curving turns, where tips and tails would be as stiff as the middle core. But now, the boards are jumped into the air, launching from half pipes edges and sliding down steel rails, requiring different flex contours. Snowboards are now required to be very flexible yet elastic being required to bend convexly and concavely, yet springing back to their shape immediately, with some riders wanting stiff tips or soft tails or a combination of both.
