A filter may remove PM2.5 and/or other airborne pollutants, which filter has fibers of an average diameter of no more than 500 nm, the fibers of at least 90 wt. % polyacrylonitrile, relative to all fibers in the filter; and a catalyst of at least 90 wt. % TiO2, relative to all catalytic metals in the filter, dispersed onto the fibers. The fibers need not be charged. The TiO2 may be condensed or precipitated onto the fibers out of a liquid containing the TiO2 and the fibers by simple methods. The catalyst may be activated by UV irradiation to decompose particulate matter having an average particle size of 2.5 μm or less, i.e., PM2.5, and/or other airborne pollutants from air. Such filters may be implemented around areas of vehicle traffic, e.g., as elements of traffic lights, and may be used to controllably purify polluted air.

A water filtration system is provided that comprises a combination of two components: silver nanoparticles immobilized on a porous carbon solid matrix and calcium carbonate silver nanoparticles. The two filter components can be present in any ratio but an approximate 50:50 ratio is preferred. Also provided is an in situ method of preparing silver nanoparticles on active charcoal. Powdered activated charcoal and silver nitrate are mixed together in a mixture of ethanol and water to form a charcoal-silver nitrate solution which is then subjected to ball milling in the presence of polypropylene to produce silver nanoparticles on active charcoal. 1. A water filtration system is provided that comprises a combination of two components: silver nanoparticles immobilized on a porous carbon solid matrix and calcium carbonate silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles immobilized on the porous carbon solid matrix are prepared in a one-step wet ball milling process that does not use an environmentally hazardous reducing agent or an organic stabilizer. The calcium carbonate in the calcium carbonate silver nanoparticles is preferably isolated from egg shells. The two filter components can be present in any ratio but an approximate 50:50 ratio is preferred. Also provided is an in situ method of preparing silver nanoparticles on active charcoal. Powdered activated charcoal and silver nitrate are mixed together in a mixture of ethanol and water to form a charcoal-silver nitrate solution which is then subjected to ball milling in the presence of polypropylene glycol to produce silver nanoparticles on active charcoal. 1. A water filtration system comprising a combination of two components:a) silver nanoparticles immobilized on a porous carbon solid matrix; andb) calcium carbonate silver nanoparticles.2. The filtration system of wherein the silver nanoparticles immobilized on the porous carbon solid matrix are prepared in a one-step wet ball milling process wherein the wet ball milling process does not use an environmentally hazardous reducing agent or an organic stabilizer.3. The filtration system of wherein the calcium carbonate in the calcium carbonate silver nanoparticles is isolated from egg shells.4. This sheet-form molding is stretched in the machine direction to produce a sheet-form polytetrafluoroethylene molding which, upon analysis with a differential scanning calorimeter, gives a crystal fusion curve having an endothermic peak in the temperature range of 345+/-5 DEG C and which has a degree of crystallization of from 0.1 to 0.85 and a specific gravity of 1.4 or lower. The molding is then stretched in the transverse direction to produce a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. The process is effective in producing, with good reproducibility, a useful porous PTFE membrane which has a high collection efficiency and a low pressure loss and is reduced in the leakage of coarse particles.
