A filter operating by surface action and having a shape generally tubular is fitted with a vibrator which has a frequency >50-60 periods a sec. The filter surface consists of longitudinal wires of triangular cross-section arranged side-by-side with their apices inward, in the form of a cylinder and the vibrator is placed inside and may be operated pneumatically or electrically. Means are provided to clean the surface periodically by vibration or by combined vibration and friction with granular matl. The vibrations of relatively high frequency have a bio-physical effect on micro-organisms such as algae, distributing the ambient medium, and causing them to break away from the surface. Lower frequencies, up to 50-60 periods of a sec. do not have this effect.

Housing with upper and lower horizontal grids has bundles of vertical or inclined filaments gripped between the grids to act as layers for filtering particles from fluids passing transversely through the layers. At least one grid is deplaceable to tension during regeneration, the filaments held loosely during filtering. The filaments can be homogeneous or very in size and material to suit the contaminated fluid. Filters clean gases or liqs. in a wide range of heavy and light industry, e.g. mining, cement prodn., foodstuffs, fuel, lubricants. Regeneration is simpler, more effective and less frequent than for known types, e.g. with multiple fabric bags.

A runoff water vault may be divided into an input chamber which receives runoff water and a second chamber which also separates and stores buoyant and non-buoyant materials separated from the runoff water stream. While the separators in such systems remove particles of different densities than water quite well, they have difficulty in removing neutrally buoyant debris. Screens are added into the water flow stream to catch and remove particles of neutral buoyancy. The screens are mounted in a manner which permits lateral movement of the screen relative to the water flow, such as shaking and/or flexing. Screen movement imparts pressure differential across the screen perforations releasing debris trapped against the screen, so that the debris will fall into an entrainment area and allow increased flow through the screen. The screens may also include one or more turbulator fins for intersecting the water flow and transferring energy to the screen, imparting lateral movement to the screen.

With the use of a filter device according to the present invention a filtering process does not have to be interrupted in order to clean the filter means, since a compact accumulation of residue formed during a filtering process under pressure from the supplied flow of liquid is ejected in its entirety by opening the closeable second discharge means, whereafter the filtering process can be immediately resumed.

The container preferably has a vertical orientation, the inlet disposed above the outlet.

The filter is flushed by rapid decompression in counter-current flow induced by placing a valve having a very rapid action of the order of 0.01 sec. on the discharge side. Thus to flush a filter the inlet valve passing raw fluid to the filter is closed and the valve on the outlet is opened and closed consecutively several times while the inlet valve remains closed. With a pneumatically operated valve using this system, only 2-3 seconds per cycle are required for flushing and a dloss of filtrate of only 1 to 2 % in incurred. Used in the filtration of liquids and gases in the oil, chemical and related industries.

In a process for filtering solvent in chemical cleaning machines, filter powder is added from pin trap 2, Fig. 2, to solvent from cleaning drum 1, in a single quantity sufficient for filtering several charges of solvent to filter casing 6. The filter powder is floated afresh on to filter elements in 6 at the start of each charge, and the accumulated cake is removed therefrom, by means operable from outside the casing, at the end of each charging operation without removal from the filter casing. Solvent, moved by pump 4, may be recycled to the filter casing via pipes 7 and 8. A preferred filter apparatus comprises a casing having conical bottom 12, Fig. 1, and a plate 13 with filter elements 15 connected thereto under tension. A domed cover 14 forms hollow space 20 for filtered solvent, discharging through pipe 21. Solvent enters pipe 16, which has one outlet 18 at the end of riser pipe 17, and another outlet 19 directed downwardly in such a manner that the solvent may impinge against the conical base of the casing. Preferably, outlet 19 is is placed off-centre and skew of the longitudinal axis of the casing. Sedimented filter powder is thus swirled upwardly, and light particles, e.g. fluff, are swirled downwardly, so that an even deposit on the filter elements is obtained. Outlets 18 and 19 may be provided with nozzles to subdivide the flow. Filter elements 15 are coiled springs. Filter cake is removed from the elements by means of pusher rods 22, extending inside the elements. When the rods 22 connected by yoke 23 are pushed downwards by actuator 25, the apertures between the coils of the springs are enlarged, causing the cake to fall away to the bottom of the casing.
