The stirring apparatus is an electronic design that generates rotating magnetic fields to drive magnetic stir bars within vials placed above the cover of the stirring apparatus. Below the cover is a magnetics board containing multiple vial groups of four air core coils arranged in rectangular patterns. Each vial group has with two pairs of diagonal coils. The coils in each pair are wired in series and have opposite winding directions. Each pair is driven by a different phase of a stepper motor driver. The vial groups are spaced appropriately for placing one vial above each group. The adjacent coils of adjacent vial groups are driven by the same phase and have the same magnetic direction. The cover contains an array of pole standoffs that matches the coil pattern. The hollow center of each air core coil contains at least a portion of one pole standoff.

A crystal growing cell which has computerized temperature control and agitation means to inhibit crystal nucleation. The temperature is controlled semi-actively, i.e., by monitoring the temperature with a thermistor and balancing ambient heat loss with heat added to the system by heating resistors or heating elements. When the chemical is completely dissolved by heating the mixture to a temperature above the saturation temperature, the temperature is lowered. At the saturation temperature the temperature is initially reduced slowly to avoid crystal nucleation. The saturation temperature of the initial solution is selected to be at an intermediate temperature which is high enough that the amount of dissolved material is large enough to produce a large crystal or large crystal clusters, yet not so high that the solubility curve has a large slope and therefore requires a high degree of temperature control to avoid crystal nucleation in the solution.

The novel agitator ( 1 ) includes means for hydrodynamically generating a fluid film from the medium to be agitated and during operation, the fluid film is formed between at least one stationary part of the separating vessel ( 10 ) or a container bottom ( 11 ) and at least one part of the rotationally movable agitator head ( 2 ) that is equipped with the hydrodynamically acting means. During operation, the fluid film eliminates essentially all of the pressure on the bearing, drastically reduces the wear, and as a result, practically no further abraded material gets into the fluids to be agitated. Such agitators permit maximum speeds of up to 3000 rpm. The agitators are suitable for installation in conventional metal receptacles, but it is preferable to use plastic nonreusable agitators in nonreusable containers.
