A crystal growing cell which has computerized temperature control and agitation means to inhibit crystal nucleation. The temperature is controlled semi-actively, i.e., by monitoring the temperature with a thermistor and balancing ambient heat loss with heat added to the system by heating resistors or heating elements. When the chemical is completely dissolved by heating the mixture to a temperature above the saturation temperature, the temperature is lowered. At the saturation temperature the temperature is initially reduced slowly to avoid crystal nucleation. The saturation temperature of the initial solution is selected to be at an intermediate temperature which is high enough that the amount of dissolved material is large enough to produce a large crystal or large crystal clusters, yet not so high that the solubility curve has a large slope and therefore requires a high degree of temperature control to avoid crystal nucleation in the solution.

By using means external to the vessel to rotate and/or stabilize the pumping or mixing element levitating in the fluid, including possibly rotating the superconducting element itself or moving it relative to the vessel, the desired effective pumping or mixing action may be provided.

An improved immersible magnetically-coupled mixer has a plurality of rollable bearing assemblies readily cleanable by flushing in place and easily removable and replaceable without damage to either the mixer impeller or the bearings. The rollable bearings are resistant to corrosion, capable of running without lubrication, and have low propensity for batch contamination through wear. The rolling and fixed elements of the bearings are impervious to attack by the process materials being mixed, the rollable elements, preferably balls, can be formed of a hybrid ceramic such as silicon nitride, and the races can be formed of a nickel-beryllium or cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy. A mixer impeller having a central bore is rotatably mounted at the upper end of the bore on the rollable bearings on an adapter collar receivable over an end of a fixed impeller shaft attached to the inner wall of a vessel at the bottom of the mixing space, which shaft may be on existing mixer shaft, thus requiring no modification of the shaft to retrofit the impeller assembly. The impeller contains magnets and is couplable in driving relationship to an external magnetic mixer drive. The bearings are exposed to the liquid in the vessel during agitation, and the impeller provides a continual flow of liquid across the bearing balls and races and the adapter collar, preventing formation of stagnant areas of process materials within the mixer assembly and permitting cleaning of all mixer surfaces by flushing.

An improved magnetic mixer includes an agitator that includes a plurality of agitator magnets. A bearing arrangement allows the agitator to be magnetically levitated along the outer surface of a cylindrical vessel fitting located within a mixing vessel. The same magnetic force that is used to levitate the mixer drives the agitator. The magnetic force is preferably generated by a plurality of magnets which rotate within an aperture extending into the vessel fitting. By magnetically levitating the agitator, there is no thrust generated by the agitator against the vessel fitting which eliminates the need for thrust bearings and reduces the overall frictional forces. The low friction results in reduced particle generation, reduced power consumption and reduced maintenance compared to conventional magnetic mixers.
