The pseudo isothermal chemical reactor has several box-shaped heat exchangers with a flat rectangular shape. The heat exchangers are made from two metal sheets laid on each other with a gap between them and joined along their perimetre, forming an inner cavity through which a fluid heat carrier is passed in a defined direction. Between the metal sheets inside the heat exchanger, there are intermediate members, preventing collapsing or bulging of the metal sheets. The intermediate members are in form of metal gauze, stretched metal plates or bars and are welded to the sheets of the heat exchanger at pre-selected points. Temperature control and efficient heat transfer are important to producing high quality polymer drag reducing agents from alpha-olefin and/or other monomers. Many polymerization reactions are exothermic, and controlling or minimizing the exotherm combined with low reaction temperatures yields high molecular weight and, for poly(alpha-olefins), high quality drag reducing agent polymers. It has been found that a shell and tube heat exchanger-type reactor, with the inner tubes hosting the reaction mixture and a coolant circulating through the shell side gives good temperature control. The use of appropriate release agents helps to keep the inner reaction chambers from building up any polymer residue. These reactors can be operated in a continuous filling and harvesting mode to facilitate the continuous production of polymer drag reducing agent and related formulations.

Methane reacts with steam generating carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a first catalytic reactor; the resulting gas mixture undergoes Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a second catalytic reactor. In the steam/methane reforming, the gas mixture passes through a narrow channel having mean and exit temperatures both in the range of 750° C. to 900° C., residence time less than 0.5 second, and the channel containing a catalyst, so that only reactions having comparatively rapid kinetics will occur. Heat is provided by combustion of methane in adjacent channels. The ratio of steam to methane may be about 1.5. Almost all methane will undergo the reforming reaction, almost entirely forming carbon monoxide. After Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the remaining hydrogen may be fed back to the combustion channels. The steam for the reforming step may be generated from water generated by the chemical reactions, by condensing products from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and by condensing water vapor generated in combustion.

In each channel of a stream there is the wavy material foils, which surfaces are coated with the catalytic material, except for the places where they contact to the sheets. On each end of the reactor there are the gas-collecting mains for the gaseous mixtures feeding in the channels of the streams. At that the gas-collecting mains are communicating with the adjacent channels separately. The reactor realizes feeding of the various gaseous mixtures in the adjacent channels , which may be under the different pressures, and the corresponding chemical reactions in them are also different. When one of the reactions is endothermic reaction, then the other reaction is exothermal; the heat is transmitted through the sheets separating the adjacent channels from the exothermic reaction to the endothermal reaction. The reactor may be used in the compact-type installation for realization of conversion of the methane with the steam, for production of the necessary heat at the methane catalytic combustion, and also Fisher-Tropsh synthesis, so this general method includes conversion of the methane in the long-chain hydrocarbons. The technical result of the invention is realization of the gaseous phases reactions at the increased pressures and especially for realization of the highly exothermal and endothermal reactions. En consecuencia, la totalidad de los canales de flujo dentro del modulo estan ya sea a la presion de su ambiente o estan bajo compresion; ninguna parte esta bajo tension. Esto simplifica el diseno del modulo e incrementa la proporcion del volumen de reactor el cual puede ser ocupado por el catalizador.

A chemical reactor with variable output is obtained in a preferred embodiment by reversibly joining reactor stacks comprising irreversibly joined reaction units, these reaction units consisting of a plurality of simple plates. Other embodiments employ at least one of an array of parallel fluid channels having different widths, bifurcated fluid distribution channels to achieve a substantially even flow equipartition for fluids with varying viscosities flowing within the fluid channels of each reaction unit.

A stacked plate chemical reactor in which simple plates, each incorporating no surface features other that an opening, are stacked together. When openings in adjacent plates are properly aligned, a fluid pathway is defined between inlet ports for each chemical reactant and an outlet port for a chemical product. In one embodiment of the invention, sixteen simple plates are stacked to provide a reactor incorporating three heat transfer fluid pathways, two reactant fluid pathways, one product fluid pathway, multiple mixing chambers, multiple reaction chambers, two reactant pretreatment heat exchangers, two reaction chamber heat exchangers, and multiple temperature sensor pathways. Precise dimensional control of the reactant fluid pathway height enables stacked laminar flow paths for the reactants to be achieved, allowing efficient and rapid diffusion mixing to occur. Because the simple plates incorporate no features other than openings, fabrication of such plates is easily achieved. Different reactor designs, having additional reactant pathways, more or fewer heat transfer fluid pathways, more or fewer heat exchangers, more or fewer mixing chambers, more of fewer reaction chambers, and more or fewer sensor pathways can readily be achieved by adding or removing plates from the stack, and or by changing the pattern and number of openings in the simple plates that are used. The simple plates can be field in the stack during use of the chemical reactor using pressure exerted on opposite outer simple plates of the stack, or can be permanently joined. A preferred material for the fabrication of the plates is stainless steel, although other materials such as glass, plastic, and other metals can alternatively be used, which are compatible with the selected reactants and the desired product.

The alignment of the supply channels is such that fluids are introduced into the chamber at both tangential and radial directions. In the case of gas/liquid mixing, particularly advantageous is the injection of the liquid stream tangentially and the gas stream radially. Reaction of the fluids can take place within the mixing chamber or in a separate reactor in fluid communication with the mixing chamber outlet. The mixer/reactor apparatus is especially useful for reactions where rapid diffusion is critical.
