A portable desk top "medical waste" fragmentation device and disposal system, complying with governmental requirements of maximum residual fragment size and sanitization. The fragmentation device includes a chamber having a rotating blade for fragmenting medical waste such as needles, syringes, vials and extracted teeth. For maximum effectiveness in reducing the medical waste into the requisite fragment size, the blade, with minimal clearance, passes between a U-shaped stationary member. During operation, the U-shaped member serves to momentarily hold the items to be fragmented in a stationary position as the blade fragments it in a shearing-type action. To ensure complete minimum size fragmentation, an agitating member continually throws the fragments into the path of the rotating blade. After the fragmentation is completed to the requisite size, the fragmentation chamber is opened into a disposal chute. The fragmented particles are drawn by centripetal force through the disposal chute into a removable and disposable receptacle having a sterilization or germicidal solution contained therein. The disposable receptacle, with sanitized waste, can thereafter be safely and legally thrown away as ordinary trash.

Comminuted medical waste, falls beneath the blade into a disposal chamber, where a sweeper element, integral with the underside of the disc blade and rotatable therewith, continuously completely clears pulverized material, without fluid disposal carriers, into an outlet attached to a disposable container. The disc blade embodies at least one short recessed portion of the circumference thereof, preferably in the form of a flat, offset from the liner by up to 1/8", to permit resilient medical waste (rubber, plastic and similar materials) to pass therethrough without blade jamming.

An integrated device for crushing and vapor-steaming medical waste enables fast maintenance and repair and has a replaceable blade, and is a detachable vertical structure that is integrally assembled. The device is integrally formed as one piece by three parts: a loading and stirring compartment (1), a crushing compartment (2), and a sterilizing and unloading compartment (3). The crushing compartment is installed with a movable blade assembly and a stationary blade assembly therein. Maintenance gates (2-3) are disposed at two sides of the crushing compartment. The maintenance gate of a crushing machine and a bearing seat (2-9) of a movable blade shaft (2-2) of the movable blade assembly are designed as one piece, and a stationary blade (2-7) of the stationary blade assembly is pressed by a pressing plate (2-8) onto an inner wall of the crushing compartment, and screws for securing the pressing plate are installed outside in. To maintain or replace the blade of the crushing machine, the maintenance gate is detached such that the replacement process of a movable blade (2-6) of the movable blade assembly can be completed outside the crushing compartment; furthermore, the operator only needs to loosen the tightening screws of the pressing plate outside the crushing compartment and does not need to enter the machine to replace the stationary blade. The present invention addresses the problems in which the replacement of the blade of the crushing machine requires a hoisting device to hoist out the entire blade roller of the crushing machine, or requires the compartment to be removed, or requires the operator to enter the compartment, thus improving working efficiency and preventing the operator from entering a dangerous area.

ABSTRACT A multi-stage treatment system for infectious waste includes a shredding stage, a granulating stage, a wetting stage, a disinfecting stage, and a dewatering stage which define a continuous treatment flowpath for the infectious waste. A plurality of blades shred and then granulate the waste in the shredding and granulating stages while simultaneously mixing the waste with disinfectant chemicals. The granulating stage insures that the waste is granulated to a sufficiently small size to facilitate the use of a relatively low concentration of a highly reactive disinfectant. Chemicals are mixed to form a volatile, highly reactive disinfectant which is then immediately injected into the waste stream. A plurality of jets wet the waste mixture in the wetting stage with the heated aqueous disinfectant. A flow restriction removes excess aqueous liquid from the disinfected waste in the dewatering stage and renders the product suitable for landfilling.

A biomedical waste treatment assembly (100) including a shredder (120), a roll-off treatment bin (140) with ozone injectors (1621-1623), an ozone source (160), and a controller (150). The controller monitors electric current drawn by the shredder as shredded waste enters the ozone-enriched treatment bin. In response to a low current level, indicating that a batch of waste has been shredded and loaded into the treatment bin, the controller starts a treatment timer (151). The timer measures elapsed ozone treatment or exposure time. If more waste is added to the shredder and another low-current level is detected, the controller restarts the treatment timer. Expiration of the timer indicates that the waste in the bin is sterilized and ready for transport to landfills. The system provides continuous waste processing and promises to boost throughput by 50% over some conventional ozone- based treatment systems.

O autômato (10) de tratamento de resíduos compreende uma cuba (12) montada sobre um chassi (21) e destinada a ser alimentada com resíduos, meios (38) de trituração dos resíduos montados no fundo da cuba, meios de aquecimento dos resíduos em vista de desinfecção, e meios computadorizados (16) de comando dos meios de trituração e de aquecimento, sendo que os meios de aquecimento compreendem pelo menos um gerador (14) de micro-ondas cuja saída está ligada a uma extremidade de um guia de ondas (20) cuja outra extremidade desemboca na cuba, o qual gerador é suportado por meios de suporte independentes do chassi ou montados sobre o chassi por meios que absorvem as vibrações da cuba durante a trituração dos resíduos.

During the whole process the waste is completely insulated from the external environment. Equipment for automatically sanitizing medical waste is mounted in a tightly closable housing (2) provided with charge nd disacharge openings (9, 10). The housing contains: a shredder (20) for comminuting the inserted raw waste and for conveying the shredded material to a mixing vessel (32) where it is diluted by water and throroughly mixed; a container (27) for storing tubes filled with several kinds of sanitizing material is configured to dispense the required number and kind of tubes into the shredder in accordance with the pH value of the mixture in the vessel signalled to a selective valve mechanism (39) by a sensor attached to the vessel; it further includes a pump (33) for recirculating liquid from the vessel to the shredder, and a pump (34) for draining fluid from the mixing vessel; a conveyor (25) for conveying the sanitized waste out of the vessel and out of the housing; electronic and control equiment is provided for operating the various components.
