A mixture of solids and liquids from a wet-preparation plant (e.g. a jig) is separated in a centrifugal strainer separator, and a part of the filtrate therefrom is supplied to a device, e.g. a solid-walled centrifuge for separating the fine solids therefrom. The "part of the filtrate" which is so supplied is selected to be of such quantity that the amount of solids contained in it corresponds substantially to the amount of solids of the same fineness absorbed by the liquid during each cycle. The liquid from the solid-walled centrifuge, together with the remaining filtrate from the centrifugal strainer separator, is returned as wash water to the preparation apparatus. In Fig. 2, (not shown), two filtrates are derived from the centrifugal strainer separator: that with low solids content is supplied to the solid-walled centrifuge and its liquid re-cycled as before; that with high solids content is further treated, and the resulting liquid optionally re-cycled.

Solids suspensions in liquids are dewatered to a low residual moisture content in a pusher centrifuge. A hydrocyclone is mounted before this and the feed to it is controlled so that the total flow of solids in a given time period remains constant. This control can be achieved either by measuring the load on the centrifuge, or by measuring the density of the slurry leaving the final hydrocyclone or by weighing the primary hydrocyclone. Used for dewatering slurries which are liable to marked variations in their solids content. These can lead to blockages in the outlet from the hydrocyclones or increased residual moisture in the prod. The system described avoids this.

A density separator 1 mounted in the lower casing 9 of a motor is driven by a vertical shaft 6 and comprises a coned tube 2 mounted within a cylindrical drum, vanes 5 being provided to ensure rotation of the oil. Oil flows into the separator through a metal gauze 11, and the purified oil issues from tubes 3 into a chamber 10 from which it is pumped back into the lubricating system. The tubes 3 may be arranged to terminate in a closed chamber so that the motion of the oil from the separator may be utilized to dispense with the circulating pump. In a modification the inner tube 2 may be cylindrical and may communicate with the outer drum by holes near the base. A manhole 7 is provided for removal of the separator for cleaning.

Extracting and separating solid particulates from a drilling fluid includes combining a stream of drilling fluid containing solid particulates with a liquefied gas to form a mixture having a reduced viscosity and/or density. The mixture enters a centrifugal separator at a pressure sufficient to keep the liquefied gas in a liquid phase where rotational forces promote the separation of at least a portion of the solid particulates from the mixture. At least a portion of the solid particulates are removed to form a fluid stream having reduced solids content. In embodiments the liquefied gas can be selected from the group consisting of an inert gas, an alkane gas, an alkene gas, an alkyne gas, a noble gas, and combinations thereof. The liquefied gas can be removed from the fluid stream after the centrifugal separator and recycled back to be mixed with the stream of drilling fluid containing solid particulates. 1.
