Liquid passes from annular orifice 45 on to surface 47. High pressure air from passage 414 and orifice 410 forms the liquid into a film and drives it towards acute-angled edge 47A. Under the influence of this air, and also further high pressure air from orifice 417, the liquid leaver the edge 47A as a spray. The two air currents meet just downstream of the edge and set up high frequency oscillations, thus further breaking up the droplets of liquid. In other embodiments, more than one flow of liquid may be used, for example, one on each of two surfaces which meet to form an acute angle.

A nozzle for discharging first and second fluids in a spray pattern into a vessel, such as oil and steam in a catalytic cracking unit, includes various configurations for preventing erosion of the outlet portion of the nozzle that otherwise might be due, for example, to contact with a catalyst or other predetermined substance. In one such nozzle, the exterior surface of the outlet portion substantially conforms to the internal contour of the vessel. In another such nozzle, the outlet portion defines a plurality of substantially concentric, substantially elliptical-shaped outlet apertures. In another nozzle, the outlet portion is formed of ceramic and is connected to the inlet portion by a metal connector. In another nozzle, the outlet portion defines a plurality of apertures angularly spaced about a peripheral region of the outlet portion for discharging a substantially flat fan spray pattern, and a second outlet portion extending along an upstream portion of the outlet portion for discharging at least part of its spray to prevent any catalyst from contactin the downstream surfaces of the outlet ortion.

The aerosolized particles having a unifo rm diameter in the range of about 1 to 5 microns are inhaled into a patient's lungs and thereafter reach the patient's circulatory system.

The mist is suspended in a fire-suppressing gas such as nitrogen. Gas is supplied to the pneumoacoustic atomizer from a system that, in some embodiments, includes both bottles and a gas generator. To minimize consumption of fire-suppressing materials, the fire-suppression apparatus can be operated in a pulsed mode wherein delivery of fire-suppressing materials is interrupted unless a sensor detects a fire re-flash. In some variations, the pneumoacoustic atomizer operates at very low pressures, as is desirable for use in aircraft.

To minimize the consumption of fire suppressing materials, the apparatus ( 10 ) may be operated in a pulsed mode, wherein the delivery of fire suppressing materials is interrupted unless a fire sensor ( 66 ) detects a fire re-flash. Furthermore, only those atomizers ( 40 ) proximate the location of a fire are activated in response to the detection of a fire. To ensure the proper atomization of the water, the opening of a water control valve ( 44 ) connected to the atomizer ( 40 ) is delayed until a predetermined interval after the opening of the gas control valve ( 42 ) for that atomizer ( 40 ).

A device of the invention for producing a monodispersion of bubbles includes a source of a stream of gas which is forced through a liquid held under pressure in a pressure chamber with an exit opening therein. The stream of gas surrounded by the liquid in the pressure chamber flows out of an exit orifice of the chamber into a liquid thereby creating a monodispersion of bubbles with substantially uniform diameter. The bubbles are small in size and produced with a relatively small amount of energy relative to comparable systems. Applications of the aeration technology range from oxygenating sewage with monodispersions of bubbles to oxygenation of water for fish maintenance.

The nozzle is mounted in a support rail 14 which may have a number of such nozzles. the air being supplied via the rail, annular passages 13 and 24, passages 11. inclined to produce a whirling motion of the air, and chamber 10 to an annular outlet defined by a conical member 4 and an inclined wall 5. The liquid is supplied from an inlet 26 through passages 7, 23 and 1 to the annular outlet 2. The air supply to the auxiliary outlet is a long tube 8, through the end 21 of tube 15 and then through outlets 19 in this tube to emerge as a whirling stream from the outlet, there being a valve provided to regulate this flow of air. The spraying may be aided by the establishment of an electrostatic field between the nozzle and the object to be sprayed. The atomisation and spraying may be of water, paints or other liquids and solid particles may also be added to the liquid being atomised.

The invention is directed to a stable capillary microjet and a monodisperse aerosol formed when the microjet dissociates. A variety of devices and methods are disclosed which allow for the formation of a stream of a first fluid (e.g. a liquid) characterized by forming a stable capillary microjet over a portion of the stream wherein the microjet portion of the stream is formed by a second fluid (e.g. a gas). The second fluid is preferably in a different state from the first fluid-liquid-gas or gas-liquid combinations. However, the first and second fluids may be two different fluids in miscible in each other. The stable capillary microjet comprises a diameter dj at a given point A in the stream characterized by formula (I): wherein dj is the diameter of the stable microjet, ≅ indicates approximately equally to where an acceptable margin of error is ± 10 %, ς1 is the density of the liquid and ΔPg is change in second fluid pressure from the second fluid pressure at a low velocity region (feeding region) upstream of point A to the second fluid pressure at point A.
