A method and apparatus for treating waste materials comprising, particulating the waste materials into discrete particles, heating and drying the particles in a non-oxidizing atmosphere in a drier at a temperature in the range of 800° to 860° C. for carbonizing the particles, crushing the carbonized particles and leaching the crushed carbonized particles in an acid solution for dissolution of heavy metals into the solution, separating the leach solution containing heavy metal from the carbonized particles, adding to the carbonized particles particulate sodium hydroxide, silica, feldspar and limestone in a ratio of 100:0.3-0.5:8-12:2-4, mixing said particles with 15 to 18% by weight water to form a wet mixture and continuously extruding the wet mixture to form an elongated continuous extrusion, severing the elongated extrusion into blocks or planks of predetermined length, drying the blocks or planks and heating the dried blocks or planks in a kiln at a temperature in the range of 1200° to 1300° C. for a time sufficient in an oxygen deficient atmosphere to sinter the blocks or planks and to form carbides, and separating and recovering CO 2 gas from combustion gases in the kiln.

A method of treating a material to recover an oil from the material comprises heating the material to evaporate the oil, removing gas phase fluids from the material, and separating the oil from the gas phase fluids removed from the material, wherein the method includes mixing hot vapour with the material. The material being treated in the chamber is heated by friction within the chamber generated by a rotating shaft and flail. Injection of hot vapour improves the efficiency of the process to separate oil and any other evaporable liquids at lower temperatures. The thermal energy generated within the chamber is not consumed in changing the phase of large quantities of liquids in the material, and more of the energy generated is available to heat up the material and evaporate the oil fractions from the solids.

We therefore disclose a materials recycling apparatus comprising a heat treatment chamber for processing the material at an elevated temperature, the chamber having a vent leading via a heat exchanger to a scrubber comprising a disrupted flow path, at least one spray nozzle directed towards the disrupted flow path, and a supply of liquid (ideally water with a little detergent) to the or each spray nozzle. In this way, the entrained ash can be efficiently removed from the air flow, allowing it to be vented, and the captured ash disposed of via a waste water outlet together with the ash washed from the chamber. The flow path can be disrupted by at least one baffle plate, ideally with the spray nozzle located ahead of the baffle plate(s). Thermal treatment techniques for recycling are generally very clean but their byproducts include a fine ash that may become entrained in the exhaust air plume as smoke. We therefore disclose a materials recycling apparatus comprising a heat treatment chamber for processing the material at an elevated temperature, the chamber having a vent leading via a heat exchanger to a scrubber comprising a disrupted flow path, at least one spray nozzle directed towards the disrupted flow path, and a supply of liquid (ideally water with a little detergent) to the or each spray nozzle. In this way, the entrained ash can be efficiently removed from the air flow, allowing it to be vented, and the captured ash disposed of via a waste water outlet together with the ash washed from the chamber. The flow path can be disrupted by at least one baffle plate, ideally with the spray nozzle located ahead of the baffle plate(s).

A sealing system for isolating the environment inside a vitrification container from the outside environment comprises a vitrification container with a lid. The lid comprises two or more electrode seal assemblies through which two or more electrodes may be operatively positioned and extend down through the lid into the vitrification container. The electrodes may move axially up and down through the electrode seal assemblies or lock into place. The electrode seal assemblies each comprise a housing having two halves with recessed ring grooves. Sealing rings with a split may be placed into the grooves. Gas galleries may be machined or cast into the housing such that they are adjacent to the ring grooves. The gas galleries distribute gas onto the external faces of the sealing rings causing a change in pressure resulting in the sealing rings compressing onto the electrodes and forming a seal.

The method includes: introducing collected food waste into a storage hopper; splitting the introduced food waste by a bag splitter and crushing the split food waste by a crusher; primarily drying the crushed food waste in a wet dryer; secondarily drying the wet dried waste by a dry drier; carbonizing the dry dried waste in a pyrolysis carbonization furnace; and burning and removing the odor and humid gas generated in the drying processes of the primarily and secondarily drying steps, and combustion gas generated in the carbonizing process of the carbonizing step. According to the present invention, the method for treating food waste without emitting the odor in the energy circulation type, intermediate wastes, such as impurities, drinking water, and condensed water are not additionally separated and treated in the process of treating the food waste, but dried and carbonized together, thereby simplifying the processes for reducing costs such as facility costs and operating costs. The leakage of odors, which may be unintentionally produced during the separate separation process, may be prevented. Waste heat and steam generated during the treatment process are recycled as energy, thereby reducing external supply energy required for the treatment process of the food waste.
