A reusable die for cold forging includes a metal casing, a bottom cover which has metal supporters welded on it and keyholes, and a film having desirable shape corresponding to the die cavity. The film is made of PET or PVC and provided at the top of the casing. Several layers of "cloth" of Kevlar fibre are placed into the casing, serving as upper stuffing, and several layers of stainless steel net are placed into the casing, serving as lower stuffing. The casing is inversed and covered by the bottom cover. Liquid mercury following steel balls or iron sand is filled into the casing from the keyholes until the casing is full. The mercury is rapidly cooled and solidified at a temperature lower than -40 °C, so that the die which can withstand the force of cold forging is completed. A solution treatment is firstly performed for a non-heat-treated Ni based alloy having a composition equivalent to that of Inconel 718 (registered trademark). Subsequently, a primary aging treatment is applied by holding the Ni based alloy at 610 to 660 °C for 5 to 10 hours. After that, a secondary aging treatment is performed by holding the Ni based alloy at 710 to 760 °C for 5 to 10 hours. There are 700 or more precipitates per µm2, in which each precipitate has a longer diameter of not less than 0.5 nm, in a metal microstructure of the Ni based alloy. Some of the precipitates are large precipitates having average diameters of 25 nm to 1 µm. There are 10 or more large precipitates per µm2. A forging die is produced with the Ni based alloy.

The polycarbonate female mould shells are then used to make confectionary. In a second example, a male pattern of high speed steel is pressed into a superplastic block to form a female mould. The female mould is then used for moulding rubber.

After that, a secondary aging treatment is performed by holding the Ni based alloy at 710 to 760 °C for 5 to 10 hours. There are 700 or more precipitates per µm2, in which each precipitate has a longer diameter of not less than 0.5 nm, in a metal microstructure of the Ni based alloy. Some of the precipitates are large precipitates having average diameters of 25 nm to 1 µm. There are 10 or more large precipitates per µm2. A forging die is produced with the Ni based alloy.

A tool made of powdered metal, such as a modified T15 HSS in powdered form, and having a multi-lobular end profile for punching multi-lobular recesses into workpieces, such as into the heads of fasteners. The tool is homogenous and contains only carbides which are relatively small, such as in the 1-4 micron range. Also provided is a method of fabricating such a tool. The method requires that a powdered metal bar is cut and then the cut piece is worked to provide the multi-lobular tool. The final part is theoretically 100% dense, as opposed to being only 95-98% dense as in metal injection molded parts. In use, the final part, due to how it is fabricated, has increased column strength and increased impact resistance.
