The topographical support member is formed by focusing a laser beam so that the focal point is below the top surface of a starting workpiece and drilling with the laser beam the predetermined pattern of tapered apertures. The pattern of tapered apertures forms the cluster of peaks and valleys surrounding each aperture on the top surface of the resulting support member.

The cutting of fibrous material which does not melt easily is effected to avoid the unravelling of cut edges, using ultrasonic or laser beam techniques. The method includes (a) applying a thermoplastic powder material to the cutting region, and (b) applying thermal shock to the localised area, sufficient to destroy the fibres of the material, and melt the powder on eithe rside of the cut, and (c) pressing the cut edges while the fused thermoplastic powder is still soft. Woven or non-woven fabrics have a tendency to unravel, after cutting, and normally require a sewn hem. The method of the invention disposes of the sewn hem, and provides a thermo-cutting technique applicable to non-fusible or non-thermoplastic fibres.

In various implementations, an interactive textile that includes conductive thread woven into the interactive textile is received. The conductive thread includes a conductive wire (e.g., a copper wire) that that is twisted, braided, or wrapped with one or more flexible threads (e.g., polyester or cotton threads). A fabric stripping process is applied to the interactive textile to strip away fabric of the interactive textile and the flexible threads to expose the conductive wire in a window of the interactive textile. After exposing the conductive wires in the window of the interactive textile, an electronic component (e.g., a flexible circuit board) is attached to the exposed conductive wire of the conductive thread in the window of the interactive textile.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of:collecting scraps of the gas diffusion layer separated from the GDL fabric panel.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:in the step of cutting the gas diffusion layer with the laser,dirt attached to the GDL fabric panel is removed by spraying air.4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:normal gas diffusion layers and abnormal gas diffusion layers are divided and loaded according to the result of the visual examination.5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of:filtering granular dirt at an exit of the conveyer.6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:the step of performing a visual examination of the upper and lower sides of the gas diffusion layer is performed while the gas diffusion layer is being moved. The present application relates to a method of providing a finishing pattern on a workpiece ( 2 ) by a laser apparatus ( 1 ) comprising at least one laser source ( 10 ), preferably a pulsed laser source, generating an output laser beam ( 11 ), moving means ( 12 ) for said laser beam and a control unit ( 101 ) for controlling said laser source ( 10 ) and said moving means ( 12 ). The method comprises the step of providing command instructions for operating said laser apparatus ( 1 ) for scribing a predetermined finishing pattern on a workpiece ( 2 ), and the step of operating said laser source ( 10 ) and said moving means ( 12 ) for generating said output laser beam ( 11 ) for scribing lines of the predetermined finishing pattern on said workpiece ( 2 ) according to said command instructions. The step of operating the laser source comprises at least one operating mode (C) wherein the energy per unit surface delivered by said laser beam ( 11 ) is variable, preferably within a single scan line, by changing the scanning speed (V) of the laser beam ( 11 ), and the output power (P) of the laser source and/or the duty cycle (DC) are maintained at a constant value.

Non-conductive workpieces present a problem where laser treatment of a workpiece is to be augmented by the application of an arc, since the arc cannot be struck to the workpiece. In the present invention a laser beam 10 is augmented by an arc struck between an electrode 26 and an electrode 17 which is usually on the other side of the workpiece 15 from the laser beam. The arc then usually either penetrates the workpiece, or two arcs are formed on respective sides of the workpiece. Inert or reactive gas may be directed at the heated zone of the workpiece. <IMAGE>

A process for preweakening the inside of an automotive trim piece cover layer of various constructions by use of a laser beam so as to enable formation of an air bag deployment opening in the trim piece formed at the time the air bag deploys. The laser beam impinges the inside surface of the cover to form a groove scoring or spaced perforations to form a preweakening pattern. A robot arm may be used to move a laser generator so as to form the preweakening pattern. The laser beam can be controlled in accordance with sensed conditions to achieve accurate preweakening, and may also be used to trim substrate panels and to perform other cutting operations.
