A machine and method wherein a pusher advances a piece of meat to be sliced across the plane of a slicing blade against a backstop. The blade removes a slice from the piece. The difference between the slice weight and a preselected reference weight is used to adjust the separation of the backstop from the plane of the slicing member and hence the thickness of the next slice to be cut from the piece so as to tend to closely conform the weight of the next slice to the reference weight. Clamps hold the piece during slicing but release to allow the pusher to again advance the piece for production of the next slice. The pusher is actuable for ejecting a residual butt portion of the piece to enable loading of a new piece.

A method for weighing sliced products to generate product batches of a pre-determined weight. A slicer slices products which are disposed onto a slice scale located beneath the output end of the slicer. An intermediate weight is measured at a pre-determined point in the slicing process. The intermediate weight information is used to calculate the minimum number of completion slices, based on thicknesses of the slices, needed to meet the target weight. The competed draft is transferred to a check sale where a final draft weight is measured and compared to a sum of the intermediate weight and the weight of the completion slices. Comparison of the weight is used to adjust slicing parameters for more precise targeting of the desired weight of the next draft. Completion slices may be adjusted in thickness to minimize the giveaway weight.

A processing system () and corresponding method () are provided for processing workpieces (WP), including food items, to cut and remove undesirable components from the food items and/or portion the food items while being conveyed on a conveyor system (). A slicer comprising:a base, the base supporting a conveyor, the conveyor passing over at least part of a top of the base and capable of moving in a forward and backwards direction;a product carriage positioned above the base over the conveyor, separated from the conveyor by a spacing, the product carriage reciprocally movable between a non-slicing position and a slicing position during a slicing operation; anda slicing blade configured to cut a food product positioned within the product carriage into a slice as the product carriage is moved to the slicing position;wherein the conveyor is configured to translate forward and backwards to follow the reciprocal motion of the product carriage during the slicing operation.2. A vision system is described for viewing the end face of product mounted in a machine which in use produces measurements relating to the area of the end face and of at least one constituent part of the product which is visible in the end face. The end face is illuminated by light of two predominantly different wavelengths. One wavelength illuminates an area which contains both the end face and surrounding parts of the machine, while light of the other wavelength from a laser source produces a pattern of parallel spaced apart lines of light of the said other wavelength. A memory stores information on the components of the machine which in use extend into the field of view of the scanning means, and signals obtained from the stored information are employed to gate the video signal to exclude video signal corresponding to regions of the field view which are known not to contain any part of the product end face. The parallel lines cross the end face at a specific given angle, and parallel lines in the field of view at other angles indicate regions in the field of view which are not part of the end face of the product. Gating excludes video signal of parallel lines in the image which are not at the specific angle and of parallel lines crossing flat regions of the machine parallel to the end face of the product, to leave a residual video signal corresponding to the end face, from which an electronic mask is generated which represents the extent of the product end face. A full colour video signal of the field of view is gated by the mask. The vision system forms part of a product slicing machine and measurements and/or dimensional values obtained from the video signal control the thickness of the next slice to be cut and are also sent to slice and pack grade-level decision logic, to control down-line gates.

Aufgrund dieser Werte steuert der Computer (C) eine Trennvorrichtung (S) zum Trennen der Teilstücke vom Massestück (M). Die Erfindung ist besonders für die Verarbeitung von Nahrungsmitteln geeignet, jedoch nicht auf diesen Einsatzbereich beschränkt. For each gripper, a loaf feed drive impels the gripper (and loaf) toward the slicing station and then moves the gripper back to a home position, releasing an unsliced loaf butt on the way through a door opening in the loaf support. Each loaf feed drive includes two "short" conveyors driven at the same speed as the gripper. The loaf support is pivotally movable to a cleanup position; in its normal support position the loaf support masks the grippers, the loaf feed drive, the barrier, and the sweeps, but in cleanup position it exposes them all.
