The stapling apparatus includes a base frame including a horizontal slot, branch slots branching from the horizontal slot, rotation restricting plates protruding from a branch portion between the branch slots and the horizontal slot, respectively, and a movement guide shaft provided in parallel to the horizontal slot, a movable frame movable to a left or a right on the base frame, and a bucket for rotating a stapler, in which a pair of first guide rollers fitted into the horizontal slot and a second guide roller protruding to an outside of the horizontal slot are fixed to a lower portion of the bucket, and one of the first guide rollers is guided to move to the branch slot from the horizontal slot.

Abstract Three adjacent continuously running chain link assemblies having two contiguous common paths, respectively in those paths (1) form staples from lengths of wire and (2) insert and clench the staples while creasing a signa-ture passing through the linear path defined by the contiguous chain links. This produces simplified equip-ment operable at high speeds synchronously on line with signatures from a rotary printing press, or the like. The wire lengths are handled and formed into staples by very simple non-critical mechanical means constituting a magnetic male die member and female shaping die member carried by respective contiguously traveling chain link assemblies to mate as they move about sprockets into an arcuate path leading into their contiguous mated linear travel path. Similarly the staples are passed through the signatures and clenched in entering the second contiguous path where incremental chain link carried creasing die sets grasp, transport and crease the signatures over the linear contiguous pathway to present a folded and stapled output signature.

Abstract of the Disclosure A cyclical wire stitching machine head includes d reciprocating staple-forming and driving apparatus which is coupled to a wire gripping and feeding mechanism which reciprocates with it. During each cycle of the machine the supply wire is gripped and a predetermined length thereof is fed through a cutter to a holder and severed while, simultaneously, the length severed in the preceding cycle is formed into a staple and driven through the work against a clincher. On the retraction stroke, the holder is rotated to bring the severed length of wire into position for forming and driving during the next drive stroke. A guide tube positively guides and supports the unstraightened wire from a supply coil along a feed path from the input end of the head to the gripping and feeding mechanism. Guide means are also provided for guiding the wire from the cutter to the holder while accommodating rotation of the severed length of wire with the holder.

Stapling.-In a stapling-machine for stapling the angles of angularly-arranged work-pieces 32, Fig. 5, the staples are driven by two segmental drivers mounted on an axis 16 over the apex of an angular work-support 2, Fig. 2. The drivers are mounted on a carrier 14, which moves in guides 13 and is connected through a spring to a head 19 driven from an eccentric on a power shaft. The carrier 14 is moved downwards till it engages the work; the spring then yields, and the drivers are turned about their pivot by abutments on a bar 29 connected to the head 19. The staple is thus bent about and pressed into the work 32. The points of the staple are clinched by members 35 pivoted to a reciprocating slide 38. On the upward movement of the slide, the members 35 are turned on their pivots, to turn in the ends of the staple, by cam-faces on the work-support. The staples are formed from a strip 87 fed by rollers 88, 89 to a guide 113, through which it passes out over an anvil 60. The strip is cut by a knife 116 reciprocated by a lever 117 operated by a dog 120 connected to the feeding- mechanism. The anvil 60 is mounted on a cam-operated lever, and is normally held out of line of the driving-devices by a spring. A cam-surface on the driving-shaft causes the anvil to be moved below the drivers at the commencement of each driving operation. The wire is held on the anvil by a retainer 64, Fig. 9, provided with a bevelled edge 115<b> to permit the wire to be fed, and pressed by a spring 67 down on the upper face of the anvil. On the downward movement of the carriage 14, the ends of the wire are bent over the anvil bv formers 75, which are adapted to be turned about their pivots to wipe the ends of the wire against the inclined sides of the anvil by shoulders 81. Staple forming arrangement ( 11 ) forming part of a stapler ( 1 ) in which a workpiece ( 6 ), primarily a sheaf of papers, is stapled together. The arrangement includes a bending punch ( 15 ), which is driven by a drive mechanism ( 12,13 ) and which bends elongated staple blanks ( 8 ) over a bending cushion ( 15 ). The staple blanks, which are stored in a magazine ( 7 ) in the stapler and are fed to the bending cushion by an integral feeding device ( 14 ), are bent essentially into a U-shape having a crown ( 24 ) and a first leg ( 25 ) and a second leg ( 26 ), respectively and whereupon the bending punch is withdrawn from the bent staple by the drive mechanism. After the withdrawal of the bending punch from the bent staple, the bent staple is fed by the feeding device to a staple guide channel ( 27 ) in which the staple is driven by a drive blade ( 17 ) incorporated in the stapler into the multi-piece workpiece in order to staple the pieces together. The arrangement ( 11 ) is provided with a first and second leg catcher device 18 and 19, respectively which catch and block the respective staple legs ( 25 and 26 ), preventing them from springing back after bending until the staple has been fed into the staple guide channel.

A stapling device further includes a staple recovery box which is disposed at a staple discarding position and which recovers the tip ends to be discarded from the receiving section; and a staple discarding mechanism which delivers the tip ends received in the receiving section of the stapler unit to the staple recovery box. One of the plural stapling positions is identical with the staple discarding position.

Stapling. - To fasten - in the ends of boxes composed of sheets and cleats stapled to binding-wires, the ends are secured to the cleats by staples driven from the inside of the box by the following machine:-Two or more distant jaws support the end of the box, and independent stapling - mechanisms arranged between and adjacent to them produce the staples from wire and insert them. Upper jaws carry anvils cooperating with the stapling-devices. These are arranged at an angle with the sides of the box, to enable a long staple to be obtained and to allow sufficient wire to be fed to the stapling- mechanism, which is of the usual kind. Fig. 3 shows a plan of the jaws 4, 5 with the relative positions of the staples 3. Each stapling-mechanism is independently controlled by a separate treadle and clutch, one being used while stapling along one side of the box end B, both while working along the bottom, and the other while operating upon the third side. Each staple forming and driving apparatus comprises a reciprocating rod 6, which oscillates a sector 10 having a toothed segment which operates the staple cutting, forming, and driving mechanism, and an horizontal arm which engages a bowl 23 on a lever pivoted at 31 and coupled by a link 30 to wire-feeding mechanism. This comprises a milled disk 13 which is fed forward intermittently by a ratchet 17 operated from the link 30. The wire is nipped between an eccentric disk 13<a> and the disk 13, and carried forward in each feeding-stroke.

At the instant of change in the conveying of the strands (5, 5'), the end of the old strand (5, or 5') is automatically drawn out of the nozzle (13) by a wire withdrawal device (27). Stapling and discontinuous wire-stitching.- A machine for stapling-in the ends of boxes, of the kind in which the staples are driven point uppermost, is arranged so that the staples are made in the machine; preferably they are made point uppermost, and in this condition propelled to the driving-means. The staple wire d<21>, Figs. 6 and 7, is fed by a ratchet and pawl operated from a cam d<29> through a guide tube d<30>, which may be adjustable, and is severed by an adjustable cutter d<19> co-operating with the bevelled end of the guide tube. The severed portion is supported under a fixed former plate d<20> bv a retainer d<38> and its ends are bent upwards by wipers d<17> having notches in their upper edges and grooves on their inner sides to guide and accommodate the wire. The staple is then moved away from the path of the wire bv feeding cams d<18>. The members d<17>, d<18>, and d<19> are all fixed to a disk d<16> on the cam shaft d<15>. The staple is prevented from moving back by a spring under the former, and others on its sides. Alternatively, the staple former may be of magnetized material or made so as to be temporarily or permanently magnetized by an electric current; or separate magnetizing-devices may act upon the staples directly. A feed roller 32 is disposed in a magazine section 1 in a state that the feed roller 32 is in press contact with the lower side of a sheet-like staple fed out of a cartridge 13. A rack is formed in the support means of the magazine section 1. The feed roller 32 is operatively coupled with the magazine section 1 through a one-way clutch gear 34 in mesh with the rack 33. Only when the magazine section 1 separates from the clincher section 4, the one-way clutch gear 34 operates to rotate the feed roller 32 in the staple supply direction. A quantity of rotation of the one-way clutch gear 34 can be adjusted by a gear ratio of the combination of the one-way clutch gear 34 and the rack 33. Therefore, a sufficient quantity of feeding the sheet-like lowest staple is secured. The feed roller 32 is rotated by utilizing the forward/backward motion of the magazine section 1 with respect to the clincher section. Because of this, provision of any special drive means for rotation is not required.
