FIELD: wood-working industry. SUBSTANCE: method of obtaining the modified wood includes simultaneous drying, impregnation by immersion in the impregnating composition and action on the blank with acoustic field. Immersion of the blank in the impregnating composition, its subsequent removing, and at least partial cooling is carried out in an inert gas medium which molecular weight is greater than the molecular weight of oxygen. Before filling with inert gas the space above the surface of the impregnating composition is preliminary vacuumised, and the impregnating composition before immersing the blank is heated to a temperature of 140-230°C. The device for obtaining the modified wood comprises drying and impregnating chamber (1) with a cover (2), filled with the impregnating composition (3), in which the blank (4) is placed, and the source of acoustic energy (5) connected to the drying and impregnating chamber. The drying and impregnation chamber is provided with a heater (6) which provides heating of the impregnating composition to a temperature of 140-230°C, and the cover (2) of the drying and impregnating chamber is made leakproof and is provided with at least one pipe (7) connected to systems of vacuumising and filling with inert gas. A wood preservative composition comprises a solution of a wood preserving agent in an organic solvent, includes a dye which is inherently insoluble in the organic solvent but is rendered soluble in the said solvent such that the dye is present in the composition during impregnation of wood therewith whereupon the dye becomes insoluble in the solvent. The dye does not bleed into most types of wood paint when such a paint is subsequently applied to the impregnated wood. The dye may be rendered soluble in the organic solvent either by including in the composition a solvent for the dye, which solvent is miscible with the main solvent, or by chemically modifying the dye to a form which is soluble in the organic solvent but which reverts to the insoluble form when wood is impregnated with the composition. A method of colouring wood using the composition is also provided.

The formulation comprises: creosote; one or more surfactants such that when diluted with a predetermined quantity of water, the creosote is present as an oil-in-water macroemulsion or microemulsion; and optionally, an anti-foaming agent and/or a fire retardant. It is found empirically that the inventive concentrate allows for the use of creosote, a known-effective biocide, without many of the drawbacks inherent in such use.

A wood treatment process is disclosed in which in one aspect the wood is impregnated with a waterborne preservative such as CCA at elevated temperature and presesure. The impregnated wood and excess waterborne preservative are separated while the treatment vessel (8) is pressurized, for example by blowing the preservative out of the vessel at the treatment pressure using a pump (10). Kickback may be segregated from the wood once pressure is reduced after the separation of wood and preservative. In another aspect the wood is impregnated with a waterborne preservative and with oil, each of the impregnating steps being performed under pressure and the oil being heated. If the preservative is one such as CCA which is capable of being fixed to the wood the hot oil may enhance this as well as providing water repellency. The oil may be a process oil.

Abstract According to the present invention there is provided a method of treating timber with a creosote-containing preservative formulation adapted for use at substantially ambient temperature. The formulation comprises: creosote; one or more surfactants such that when diluted with a predetermined quantity of water, the creosote is present as an oil-in-water macroemulsion or microemulsion; and optionally, an anti-foaming agent and/or a fire retardant. It is found empirically that the inventive concentrate allows for the use of creosote, a known-effective biocide, without many of the drawbacks inherent in such use.

Subsequently, the pressure is increased to a final pressure having a maximum value of 50 kg/cm2. Where stone is being treated, the pressure is increased in a single step. Finally, the treated material is depressurized over a period of at least 20 minutes.
