A method for manufacturing a plastic fuel tank including: a) inserting a plastic parison including two distinct parts into an open two-cavity mold; b) inserting a core, bearing at least part of a reinforcing element configured to create a link between the two parison parts, inside the parison; c) pressing the parison firmly against the mold cavities, for example by blowing through the core and/or creating suction behind the cavities; d) fixing the part of the reinforcing element to at least one of the parison parts using the core; e) withdrawing the core; f) closing the mold, bringing its two cavities together to grip the two parison parts around their periphery to weld them together; g) injecting a pressurized fluid into the mold and/or creating a vacuum behind the mold cavities to press the parison firmly against the mold cavities; and h) opening the mold and extracting the tank.

In a method for simultaneously performing vacuum forming and decoration, a decorated molding having projections and depressions in a decorated surface can be obtained with high reproducibility without requiring a physical method such as embossing.

A covering for use over a vehicle airbag includes a skin layer and an attached foam layer. The foam layer is constructed from a polymer-based material that includes a polymer portion and an additive, and the additive may be selected to affect the energy transmission characteristics of the foam layer material when the covering is subjected to a laser scoring process that uses a laser light beam having a characteristic wavelength. The additive may decrease the amount of light energy transmitted through the material at the characteristic wavelength to limit the amount of energy leakage from one cut location to another during laser scoring. The decrease in light transmission through the material may be accompanied by an increase in the light absorption of the material, an increase in the amount of light reflected by the material, and/or an increase in a laser cutting rate of the material per unit energy.

A method for tiling patterned areas includes depositing a predetermined thickness of a curable material; contacting a first portion of the curable material with a mold; curing the first portion of the curable material; removing the mold from the cured first portion of the curable material; contacting a second portion of the curable material with the mold, such that the mold contacts a portion of the cured first portion of the curable material; curing the second portion of the curable material; and removing the mold to yield a seam between the cured first portion of the curable material and the cured second portion of the curable material, wherein the seam has a dimension less than about 20 micrometers.

A system for depositing a composite filler material into a channel of a composite structure includes an end-effector configured to extrude a bead of the filler material into the channel. The filler material can comprise a first group of relatively long fibers, a second group of relatively short fibers and a resin. A drive system is configured to move the end-effector relative to the channel, and a position sensor is configured to detect the position of the bead relative to the channel. A controller is configured to operate the drive system in response to the detected position and to operate the end-effector to heat and compress the filler material so as to orient the longer fibers in a substantially longitudinal direction relative to the channel and the shorter fibers in substantially random directions relative to the channel when the bead is extruded into the channel.

The skin-to-core bond line mapping system can include a laminate, an adhesive, a separator film, a core, a breather, a layup tool, bagging material, sealant, and a vacuum port. By employing systems and processes that layer separator film over adhesive and applying a core proximate the adhesive, a bagging material can be disposed over the materials to facilitate vacuum compaction, thereby impressing core impressions on the adhesive to map the areas between the skin and core that have good contact. An iterative process is disclosed, in which additional adhesive can be used to build the bond line until contact is made (or engineering tolerance is reached).

The invention relates to a hybrid component part comprising a local stiffening made of a two-stage-crosslinked polyurethane-based fibre composite material, more particularly to the production of such a hybrid component part. Said invention has for its object to specify a technology which makes it possible in cost-effective fashion to effect local stiffening of metal parts with a fibre composite material in order thus to obtain a hybrid component part. It is a fundamental concept of the process according to the present invention to use a particular polyurethane formulation which in a first crosslinking reaction can be converted into a thermoplastic polymer and later in a second crosslinking reaction is fully crosslinked to afford a thermoset matrix material. The thermoplastic polymer is characterized by a good adhesion to metal surfaces. The metal can be subjected to further forming with the attached thermoplastic material. The polyurethane is subsequently thermosettingly cured and achieves its final stiffness.

A flexible packaging laminate has built-in opening/reclose and tamper-evidence features by forming the laminate from an outer structure joined in face-to-face relation to an inner structure. Score lines are formed in both structures to enable an opening to be formed through the laminate by lifting a flap or the like out of the plane of the laminate. The score line through the outer structure defines a larger opening than the score line through the inner structure, such that a marginal region of the outer structure extends beyond the edge of the opening portion of the inner structure. The invention relates to a method for producing hollow bodies from thermoplastic material and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. The method comprises the molding of at least two sheet-like preforms in web form of thermoplastic material into two complementary shells in a multi-part tool, which in a closed position forms a mold impression, and the joining together of the shells to form an essentially closed hollow body, the preforms being brought between the parts of the tool in an opened receiving position of the parts of the tool and the preforms being placed into the part-cavities by applying differential pressure and being at least partially molded in them into shells. The shells are joined together to form an essentially closed hollow body by closing the tool to form a closed mold impression. The method is distinguished by the fact that the preforms are molded in the part-cavities while the parts of the tool are located in the opened receiving position.
