An extrusion die with adjustable land channel can be formed of a die body that includes a first die body portion and a second die body portion, a first lip body, a second lip body, and a land channel body. The extrusion die can have a flow channel that includes a land channel terminating in an outlet orifice. The flow channel may be bound on one side by the first die body portion, the land channel body, and the first lip body. The flow channel may be bound on an opposite side by the second die body portion and the second lip body. In some examples, the length of the land channel is adjustable by configuring the land channel body and/or first lip body to move across the width of the flow channel. 1. A method of adjusting a length of a land channel using an extrusion die having a flow channel terminating in an outlet orifice , the flow channel being bound on one side by at least a first die body , a land channel body , and a first die lip and being bound on an opposite side by at least a second die body and a second die lip , the method comprising:advancing said first die lip toward said second die lip and thereby adjusting a width of the outlet orifice; andadvancing said land channel body toward at least one of said second die body and said second die lip and thereby adjusting the length of the land channel.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein advancing said first die lip toward said second die lip comprises advancing said second die lip toward said first die lip such that said first die lip and said second die lip move equal distances but in opposite directions.3. In various embodiments, a device for producing a high density compact livestock feed from a loose granular material according to various embodiment can include a source for supplying a loose granular material to be treated and moving the treated material through a series of successive treatment zones. Rotatable screws are provided within an extruder to compress and transport the treated material a die. The treated material is pressed through the die while a two-dimensional cross-section compression is applied to the treated material. In various embodiments, the high density compact livestock feed is produced having a high protein content, a high fat content, high shipping durability, high quality, and high nutritional value, without the addition of additives. 1. An animal feed product having a dual-strength compact body comprising:an inner component; andan outer component surrounding the inner component and having a hardness greater than a hardness of the inner component;wherein the inner component comprises a composition formed by extruding loose granular dried distiller grains through an extruder having one or more rotating screws to change a physical property of the loose granular dried distiller grains to a modulus state, and then compressing the dried distiller grains through a die;wherein the outer component is formed concurrently with the compression of the dried distiller grains through the die to produce the dual-strength compact body; andwherein the dual-strength compact body has sufficient density to withstand being augured one or more times while remaining substantially intact.2. An animal feed product according to claim 1 , wherein:a moisture content of the dual-strength compact body is less than or equal to approximately 15 percent by weight;a protein content of the dual-strength compact body is within 5 percent of a protein content by weight of the loose granular dried distiller grain, before addition of any nutritional supplements; anda fat content ...

A method of extruding products comprises varying the rate of flow of at least one material ( 12 ) through an extrusion aperture in a die ( 10 ). The method may be used to produce an extrudate body ( 16 ) whose cross-sectional area varies along its length or to produce an extrudate body comprising two or more different materials in which the proportions of the materials varies along its length. Apparatus ( 11 ) for carrying out the method comprises an extrusion die ( 10 ) defining an extrusion aperture and a material delivery system for delivering the material(s) to the die in a suitable condition for extrusion. A control system is operative to vary the rate of flow of the material. The control system may comprise a flow control mechanism ( 240 ) in a supply path for the first material upstream from the die ( 10 ). The flow control mechanism ( 240 ) may be operative to vary the volume of the supply path and may comprise a fluid actuated resiliently deformable flexible element. The method and apparatus are particularly suited for manufacturing food products, especially confectionery products such as chocolate bars.

A compression system includes a compression device and a controller. A treated material is pressed longitudinally through a compression chamber by simultaneously applying a lateral pressure and a two-dimensional cross-section compression which includes a pressure applied in a direction traverse to a direction of transport and a pressure applied in a direction parallel to the direction of transport. The controller controls the two-dimensional cross-section compression applied to the treated material such that, during compression, liquids in the treated material migrate to the outer surface of the treated material upon reaching the outlet orifice.
