The present invention relates to a STEM with secondary curvature in extension and to methods of manufacture. In an aspect, an extendible member () is provided which is configurable between a coiled form () and an extended form (). The member comprises a longitudinal shell resiliently biased in a slit tube form in which it has a first curvature relative to the hoop of slit tube and has a secondary curvature relative to the longitudinal axis of the member. The slit tube can be opened out at the slit to assume an open form in which it has a flattened cross section in transitioning from the extended form to the coiled form. The strain energy when coiled is lower than the peak strain energy in the member when transitioning from the extended to the coiled form. 1. An extendible member which is configurable between a coiled form and an extended form , comprising a longitudinal shell resiliently biased in a slit tube form in which it has a first curvature relative to the hoop of the slit tube and has a secondary curvature relative to the longitudinal axis of the member , wherein the slit tube can be opened out at the slit to assume an open form in which it has a flattened cross section in transitioning from the extended form to the coiled form , wherein the strain energy when coiled is lower than the peak strain energy in the member when transitioning from the extended to the coiled form.2. An extendible member having a secondary curvature when extended , running substantially along the axis of extension or retraction.3. The reinforcement in the longitudinal direction of a thermoplastic thermoshrinkable product by bar band or threads by means of a known process leads to rigid thermoshrinkable products if the reinforcements are originally rigid such as metal reinforcements or the like. If said reinforcement are flexible of the filament type of fibre glass, aramide, carbon, the thermoshrinkable product will remain flexible. The aim of the present invention is to introduce a flexible reinforcement element in the thermoshrinkable product which becomes rigid only during the application, that is to say during the setting and therefore during shrinkage of the product. The handling remains easy before the setting since the flexibility is preserved, the reinforcement being flexible and the stiffness is obtained after implementation and gives a more efficient reinforcement. This phenomenon may be obtained by means of the process of the impregnated thermoplastic fibre (FIT) by means of a known process. As a fact, the preimpregnated fibre remains flexible due to the grain of powder contained therein, grains which are not melted but let the fibres forming the rovings (8) free to play between each other and said roving becomes rigid and forms a composite material (10) when applying temperature.

A heat recoverable, shrink-object is made from a mesh or web assembly having thermoplastic threads that extend in a first direction, and second threads that are essentially non-stretchable and run transversely to the first threads, that assembly is embedded in a polymer matrix which is then crosslinked; the thermoplastic threads do not crosslink; the matrix with embedded mesh or web is then heated to a temperature above the crystallite melting point of the polymer matrix and the thermoplastic threads are stretched into an elongated state at that temperature, and the stretching is maintained during subsequent cooling until a lower temperature including room temperature is reached and stretching is no longer needed to maintain said elongated state.

Fibres/fibre composites are produced for reinforcing plastics by forming woven or knitted fibres/composite plastically or elastically with ancillary fibres so that they are corrugated or made into open loops which are readily embedded in the plastic material. Aramid fibres are knitted together with the subsidiary fibres so that after shrinking the loops of the reinforcing fibres are held together like links in a chain. The material can be stretched until the loops recover their original form. Using a suitable temp. the three-dimensional form of the material can be fixed. The extensibility of the fibres greatly affects the loads which can be used. ADVANTAGE - The failing loads (where the component materials separate) are determined by failure of the stretched fibres. If the material does fail it delaminates rather than breaking up completely hence giving increased energy absorption. A heat shrinkable covering in the form of a sheet which is heat shrinkable in a longitudinal direction, and a stiffening member connected at each of two longitudinally spaced transversely extending superimposable zones of the sheet. One stiffening member has holes and the other studs in the form of arm portions which are insertable through the holes to secure the stiffening members together. The arm portions can be flattened down onto the outside of the covering to retain the stiffening members together while reducing risk of the studs interfering with items such as cables adjacent the covered article. Preferably the studs have a resiliently compressible head portion which snap fits into holes formed through the sheet adjacent the holes in the stiffening member to facilitate locating the overlapped zones of the sheet relative to one another. In use, the sheet is wrapped around an article, the stiffening members are engaged together, and the sheet is then heat shrunk. The stiffening members support the juxtaposed edges of the sheet at points intermediate the coupling points, thus resisting the tendency for the edges of the sheet to separate as a result of the hoop stresses generated in the sheet on shrinking.

High speed manufacturing using shape memory polymer composites

Structurally strong composites are formed with shape memory polymer resins to create composites with shape memory properties. A system and method for using these composite structures to quickly manufacture composite products involves: 1) creating a preform composed of a shape memory polymer composite (2); 2) heating or otherwise activating the shape memory polymer; 3) using a mold (4) to deform the composite material to a desired shape; and 4) cooling or otherwise deactivating the shape memory polymer so that the composite structure retains the desired mold shape.

A recoverable article comprising a composite structure is produced from a recoverable fabric and a polymeric matrix material. The structure is used for environmental protection of cables, pipes and other substrates. The recoverable fabric comprises a cross-linked recoverable polyolefin having a recovery stress of 1.5 to 5 mu Pa, and the matrix is cross-linked such that the recovery ratio available in the composite is at least 65% of that available in the free fabric, and the polymeric matrix material, per se, after irradiation has room temperature elongation of 400-700% measured at a strain rate of 300% per minute.

1. Method of forming a tight joint between a heat-shrunk splice box and at least two elongate substrates (1, 2), the splice box being in contact as far as possible with the outer surface of the substrates (1, 2) in the entry region of the substrates (1, 2) into the splice box, wherein the substrates (1, 2) are arranged in a heat-shrinkable sheathing (3) and two regions of the wall of the sheathing (3) are mutually opposite between the substrates (1, 2), and wherein the sheathing (3) is heated and wherein the entry region of the splice box is deformed between the substrates (1, 2) by bringing the wall regions close together to form channels (8, 9) for the substrates (1, 2), characterized by the combination of the following features : a. the material used for the sheathing (3) is a plastic tape with at least one inverted fabric layer (7) located within the wall of the sheathing (3), and b. the deformation of the splice box in the entry region is effected by at least one insertion element (10, 11) which is taken from one side through both walls and which is fixed in a self-locking manner on the other side of the second wall or in a hollow part or by means of a hollow part.
