The heat shrink sleeve is for cables or tubes and is wrapped around at the ends which are fixed together by C-shaped forms in the sleeve which interlock. An inner support overcomes difficulties of assembly of earlier methods and provides good retention of the longitudinal edges. A heat shrink sleeve (1a) has C-shaped swellings (4a, 5a) towards the exterior and close to both the longitudinal edges (2a, 3a). The thickness of material is constant including the area of the swellings. A reinforcing strip (7a) is inserted into the smaller swelling. This contains a wire (7c) which allows the material to give good resistance to compression. The smaller swelling is inserted into the larger when the sleeving is wrapped around the sleeved object. An inner section (7b) of the reinforcing strip is surrounded in glue (17) to provide sealing when heat is applied. The combined swellings are compressed by a C-shaped rail (6a).

A method of joining abutting surfaces of polymeric material includes disposing between the surfaces insert means formed of thermoplastic material having dispersed therein a heat-activatable cross-linking agent. Reinforcement in the form of a foraminous member is positioned along the line of the join. The resulting assembly is heated under compression to cause the insert means to flow and the cross-linking agent to be activated. As a result, the insert means becomes bonded to the surfaces of the polymeric material and to the reinforcement means. One article produced by this method is in the form of a sleeve, the line of the join being substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. The join is continuous from one end of the sleeve to the other and is of essentially the same thickness as the walls of the sleeve.

The cuff, for the repair of protection of electrical cables and tubes and the like, has staples fixed to bands along the parallel edges of the heat shrinkable sheet material as the closure. The staples form the row of teeth of a sliding clasp fastener, locked together by the slide. The bands to hold the staples are of a material which is resistant to high temps. and is difficult to ignite, and they have a greater density in the teeth (14) zone than in the remainder of the material to provide mechanical strength and a firm anchoring action. The free edge of the mounting band is thickened into a beading by a stiffened insert. At least one edge of the cuff material is extended by a film-type material at the sliding clasp fastener, to give an electrical insulation and a sealing underlay between the cuff closure and the cable/tube being covered. The sliding clasp fastener bands are welded into place in gaps in the film material.

ABSTRACT A heat shrinkable covering for an article, such as a pipe, comprises a heat shrinkable material in the form of a flexible sheet which is wrapped around the article so that its ends overlap. The overlapping end portions are bonded together by means of a hold-down adhesive, preferably a shear-resistant adhesive, leaving an adhesive-free region at the interface. Heat is applied externally to the overlapping end portions so as to effect a fusion bond at the adhesive-free region of the interface, and the sheet is heat-shrunk onto the article in known manner. The covering offers the advantages and convenience of application common to conventional wrap-around sleeves, while having the intrinsic strength properties of a seamless tubular sleeve.

A cable or pipe connection and seaning system employs heat shrink tapes (1) or mouldings of known type to provide the outer sheath of the joint. A method of making a bond structure and a bond structure are provided that produce concurrently a peel bond and a lap bond. One end of a sheet to be joined to a second end of the same or other sheet is folded back on itself and on end of the other member inserted. The two pairs of contacting surfaces thus formed are subsequently bonded to each other. The bonding may be by any means and the clamping force across the bond during bonding need be applied from one side of the sheet only. The multiple cores of a cable are joined electrically to the cores of another cable. Over the joint a plastics sheath is wrapped or preferably a plastics tube with a slide fastening is closed to clamp a sheath formed by two sheets welded-together along a line. This inner sheath is sealed to the cable cover at the ends. A larger and thicker cigar shaped sheath is slid over the joint from its position on one cable, and is sealed to the cable at each end by spongy discs (23). A plastics clasp (30, 31) is closed to shorten the circumference. Chemicals and a catalyst are inserted into the inner space via a nozzle (27), and foaming takes place with some expansion filling the space with insulating protective material which becomes hard after curing.

According to the invention, the method consists in using a composite tape, consisting of a layer 12 of heat-shrinkable material prestretched in a preferred direction and including, on at least one of its faces, a layer or coating 13 of a heat-meltable adhesive, in mounting in or around the tape at least one electrical conductor 14, preferably distributed in the thickness of the adhesive layer 13, in winding the tape around the cable 1 with the adhesive layer facing the latter, in the intervening space between this cable and the external duct 4 and then in resistance-heating the composite tape by means of the electrical conductor in such a way that, as a result of the shrinkage of the heat-shrinkable material in the direction of the stretching of the layer, its thickness increases in its winding around the cable, thereby producing the sealing across the intervening space by virtue of the melting of the adhesive forming the binder between the successive facing surfaces. The invention also relates to the composite tapes used for implementing this method.

ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to the fabrication of boat hulls and other three-dimensional objects of thermoplastic sheet material. The process comprises heating a sheet of the material along a predetermined pattern of lines to a temperature at which the material is softened, placing the sheet in a jig with the material of the sheet still soft along the heated liens and folding it along the softened lines, and retaining the sheet in its folded state in the jig until the material along the said lines is cool and stiffens. The preferred thermoplastic material is polypropylene, and by reversely folding the sheet along selected fold lines and integral hinge can be induced. In making a foldable boat, the pattern of fold lines is such that the sheet in its folded state has the shape of the hull of a boat. A blank when so prepared can be rolled into extremely compact form for transportation and to erect the hull is merely unrolled and with a little manual assistance put into the required shape and secured. Gunwales, one or more stiffening members and one or more seats can readily be affixed.

Method for the assembling and/or closing of pipe materials by means of an assembly piece made of a shrinkable plastic material, said assembly piece comprising at least two edge sections (9) which face each other and extend substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the pipe items, and where the edge sections (9) extend substantially at right-angles to the shrinkage direction, said edge sections (9) being introduced through a slot/opening (14) in a holding tool (10) so that the edges of the edge sections (9) lie freely in relation to the holding tool (10), after which the assembly piece is shrunk so that the free-lying edges are thickened. There is hereby achieved the possibility of being able to assemble and repair pipe materials by means of muffs and T-pieces regardless of the diameter of the pipes, in that the muff/T-piece is cut longitudinally and the flaps created hereby are introduced through the holding tool, after which the shrinking is effected, for example by the application of heat. The dimension of the material is changed as a consequence of this having been expanded before the heat is applied, and in the process it will attempt to regain its original thickness, whereby the material wedges itself firmly in the slot and locks itself. With this shrinking, a welding and shrinking effect arises which ensures that the assembly is permanent and tight.

ABSTRACT HEAT RECOVERABLE ARTICLE The invention relates to a heat-recoverable covers which comprise embedded electrical resistance heaters, and to methods of covering an elongate object using such covers. In a preferred embodiment, the cover comprises a heat-recoverable polymeric sheet or fabric, pro-vided with upstanding rails as a first closure means. A heating element is embedded in the sheet, and arranged to follow a serpentine path such that each return loop protion projects beyond the edges of the cover. The sheet is coated on its inner surface with a layer of adhesive and/or sealant In use, the cover is wrapped around a substrate at least once, and first and second closure means are engaged to hold the cover in the wrapped configuration. The cover is then heated to cause the cover to recover, and the adhesive and/or sealant to form a seal.

ABSTRACT The ends of heat-recoverable polymeric sheet material are joined by overlapping the ends and bonding them together by means of a laminar panel comprising a layer of a cross-linked hot-melt adhesive coated on one surface of a reinforced polymer layer. The panel has a length approximately equal to the width of the sheet material being joined and is disposed, adhesive side down, so that approximately half of its adhesive coated sur-face contacts the sheet material on either side of the line defined by the uppermost of the overlapping ends. The panel is heated to activiate the adhesive and form a secure bond joining the ends. Heat-recoverable sleeve can be made by joining the two ends of a single length of heat-recoverable sheet material.

The invention relates to a method for sectionally sheathing objects with plastic, which is distinguished by the fact that a crosslinked tube produced from a shrinkable plastics material is stretched axially or radially under the effect of heat. Subsequently, this tube is cut axially for the formation of a shrinkable band. A predetermined length of this shrinkable plastics band (6) is laid around an object (18) over a predetermined section and held in a position sheathing the object. By supplying heat, the shrinkable band laid around the object is shrunk closely around the object to be sheathed, and the end sections of the shrunk band which are brought into contact against each other are bonded to each other under the effect of pressure and heat. Furthermore, the invention comprises a device for sectionally sheathing objects with plastic, which comprises: a means for wrapping around a shrinkable band (6), around a section of the object (18) to be sheathed, a means (11, 12) for holding the end sections of the band laid around the object, a means for pressing together the end sections of the band, a means for severing the ends of the band section as well as a means (19) for heating the shrinkable band to the shrinking temperature. <IMAGE>
