A welding device includes a rotating roller having an axially extending channel in which a continuously heated welding head is located, and the welding head is moved intermittently out of the channel, pref. by annular cams within the roller, to contact a plastic sheet advanced into contact with the roller on pref. an endless belt to produce a weld line on the sheet. Pref. the sheet passes around the roller over an arc of contact of 10-150 degrees and the welding head projects from the channel during a corresponding rotation of the roller and pref. the welding head cuts the sheet simultaneously with forming the weld line. The device is used for making plastic bags and operates rapidly to produce a strong and uniform weld.

The eddy current layer carrier is in contact with the sealing material to heat it in the sealing zone and give the sealing action. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is for providing a sealed seam with a sealing material which is a non-hf inductive activated material using inductive HF sealing appts. for sealing packaging materials. The top curl on containers such as drinking cups and food tubs is formed after shrink forming. Further, the bottom seam of the container is reinforced by ironing after shrink forming.

In a process to apply a wood veneer facing material to a wood-based substrate, one bears an adhesive. The veneer is presented to the substrate at an acute angle alpha. A laser beam is directed through the gap between veneer and substrate at the nip gap, activating the adhesive. The veneer (3) and substrate (1) advance together under a rolling press wheel (4). A sensor determines how much energy is taken up by the adhesive and the information is registered by a feedback control system to modify process parameters as necessary e.g. feed rate, laser power, laser beam geometry, press force. The acute angle is less than 20. The laser beam is directed via a lens system or a beam oscillator. The laser beam wavelength is between 800 and 2500 nm or 9 m and 11 m. The laser is a diode laser, a solid body laser, fiber laser or CO(2 laser. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly.

ADHESIVE-FREE BONDING OF CONTINUOUSLY MOVING WEBS TO FORM LAMINATE WEB AND PRODUCTS CUT THEREFROM ABSTRACT Method and apparatus for ultrasonically bonding continuously moving webs to one another using a stationary vibrating horn and a relatively slick, non-thermally softenable moving slip layer interposed between the webs to be bonded and the horn to prevent web damage. Interposing the slip layer between the webs to be bonded and the ultrasonic horn improves both the quality and efficiency of web bonding. It reduces friction between the travelling webs and the substantially stationary ultrasonic horn not only due to its relatively slick surface, but also due to the compressive force which the slip layer exerts upon the webs to be bonded. This in turn minimizes jamming and hangups in the very limited clearance existing between the rotating anvil roll and the substantially stationary vibrating ultrasonic horn. In addition, the slip layer maximizes retention of heat either generated in the laminate web by the ultrasonic horn or transferred to the laminate web structure by preheating one or more of the webs. If desired, the slip layer may be comprised of a continuous belt which rotates about the ultrasonic horn. In addition, a secondary slip layer may be provided intermediate the webs to be bonded and the rotating anvil roll to minimize heat transfer from the webs to the anvil roil and to prevent sticking of the webs to the anvil roll. In a particularly preferred embodiment the peripheral edges of the raised anvil bosses are relieved slightly to minimize web tearing and to enhance bond strength. In still another preferred embodiment the anvil roll is heated to a temperature approximating the maximum temperature achieved by the webs being banished to minimize heat transfer from the webs to the anvil roll during the bonding operation. Novel laminate products bonded on-the-fly without the use of an ancillary adhesive may also be produced.

The movable cardboard storage carriage unit stores the cardboard by means of cardboard storage rolls, which retain the single-sided laminated corrugated cardboard web flat on the bridge. In the event that a splicing defect is detected, the defective piece is cut out by the clamping and cutting unit and ejected by the conveyor belt system to the waste cardboard collecting carriage through the opening. Hence, it follows that productivity is improved.

A first welding plate(1) moves either around a closed track(4) or a linear path and in the welding position lies opposite a support or a second welding plate(6). Two films forming a tubular film are pressed together between the sealing faces(30) of the welding plates by a drive mechanism. The gap(a) between the sealing faces is set by a control unit for the drive mechanism. Gap dimensions are always less than or equal to total thickness of the two film layers lying on each other. When welding plates(1,6) move along a linear path the gap is set by the control unit with the tubular film stationary and welding plates in contact with the film. When the welding plates move around closed tracks(4) the plates move along a straight section(5) with the film during the welding stage and the gap(a) is set by the control unit. The gap may remain constant or vary during the welding stage. Prior to welding the distance(a) can be set to a value equal to or greater than the thickness of both film layers to permit preheating. The gap can then be reduced to exert sealing force. An independent claim is included for a packaging machine, in particular a vertical tubular bag production machine with an electromagnetic linear drive. The drive works on the principle of a suspended railway and comprises a first part and a second part moving relative to the first to vary the gap, which is determined by each position of the moving second part relative to the first part.

The control part executes first through third control steps. In the first control step, the second members (55, 75) are caused to squeeze the packaging material by causing the lateral seal part at a reference position to descend therefrom faster than the packaging material being conveyed downward. In the third control step, the lateral seal part is returned to the reference position after the lateral seal part has been moved in such a manner as to cause the first member (11a, 11b) to be separated from the packaging material.

The sealing section includes a seal bar having a heat pipe with a relief zone, through which pressure is relieved. The heat pipe is preferably disposed in or near the seal bar. A method and apparatus for making bags is disclosed. It includes receiving a film and imparting a plurality of successive seals to the film to form bags. The location of the imparted seals is determined by monitoring at least two sensors. A plurality of perforations are imparted to the film at locations relative to a corresponding seal in response to the determination. The position of a perforator such as rotary position, of a knife may be controlled in response to determining the location. The seals may be formed by a rotary drum, and the perforation by a rotary knife. The sensors may be at the same or different cross machine direction and/or machine direction locations. Startup may include adjusting and recording the position of a prior perforation relative to a prior corresponding seal, and using that recording as a base relative location in another embodiment.
