A substantially paper-based composite container for an off-gassing product includes a paperboard can body having a substantially gas-impervious liner attached to an inner surface thereof, and a pair of substantially paper-based end closures attached to the opposite ends of the can body, each end closure defining a generally cylindrical sealing panel in contact with an inner surface of the can body. Heat-sealable materials are disposed on opposing surfaces of the sealing panel and can body. The sealing panels of the end closures are attached to the can body by heat seals. The heat seal for at least one of the end closures is discontinuous such that at least one vent channel extends through the heat seal so as to establish fluid communication between an interior of the composite container and the environment outside the composite container. The at least one vent channel is operable to vent excess gas pressure from the interior of the container. 1. The apparatus may include a cylindrical mandrel and a blank may be formed into a cylindrical tube around the mandrel. Rotational apparatuses may engage portions of a blank that may be in a flat configuration and may rotate the portions around the outward cylindrical surface of the mandrel. Free edges of the tubular blank may be sealed by a sealing strip that may be T-shaped in cross section. A cup may be installed in an end opening, such as a bottom end, of the cylindrical tube. The cup may be sealed in the end opening by a seaming process using a seaming apparatus.

A heat insulating paper cup with improved insulation in areas where printed matter exists. The printed matter is applied using a water-based alkyd or epoxy ink. In one embodiment the cup can include a body member having an inside surface and an outside surface, and a bottom panel member having a upper surface and a bottom surface. The body member is coated on its outside surface with a foamed synthetic resin, and on its inside surface with an unfoamed synthetic resin. The bottom panel member is optionally coated on its upper surface with a foamed or an unfoamed synthetic resin. The body member and bottom panel member are oriented and joined to form a seal at an interface between a portion of inside surface of the body member and a portion of the upper surface of the bottom panel member. Compositions and methods for manufacturing containers from sheets having a hydraulically settable matrix. Suitable compositions are prepared by mixing together a hydraulic binder, water, and appropriate additives (such as aggregates, fibers, and rheology-modifying agents) which impart predetermined properties so that a sheet formed therefrom has the desired performance criteria. Hydraulically settable sheets are formed from the mixture by extrusion, then calendering the sheets using a set of rollers and then drying the sheets in an accelerated manner to substantially harden the sheets. The resulting hydraulically settable sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets made from presently used materials like paper, cardboard, polystyrene, or plastic. The inorganically filled mixtures are formed into sheets by first extruding the mixtures and the passing the extruded materials between a set of rollers. The rolled sheets are dried in an accelerated manner to form a substantially hardened sheet, such as by heated rollers and/or a drying chamber. The inorganically filled sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets presently made from traditional materials like paper, paperboard, polystyrene, plastic, or metal. Such sheets can be rolled, pressed, scored, perforated, folded, and glued. They have especial utility in the mass production of containers, particularly food and beverage containers.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved apparatus and method for manufacturing completed foam plastic containers are provided herein. An endless mandrel chain carries cup forming mandrels along a manufacturing path. After each mandrel is preheated, a bottom blank is placed on the mandrel bottom and held there by a vacuum. A cylindrical blank formed from longitudinally stretch-oriented foam sheet material is then placed onto the mandrel. This cylindrical blank is tightly tamped onto the mandrel and is clamped in place. Radiant heat is then used to shrink form a finished container. The bottom is then sealed to the cylindrical blank and the mandrel is transferred to a curling assembly where the top edge portion of each finished container is lubricated and then curled to form a finished rim. Such apparatus may form containers having a dual tapered configuration which allows the containers to be more tightly stacked.

Disclosed is an insulated container with a body of an insulating polymer where localized plastic deformation in at least one selected region of the body is enabled by reducing the polymer density by foaming the region. The insulative cup comprises a body including a sleeve-shaped side wall and a floor coupled to the body to define an interior region bounded by the sleeve-shaped side wall and the floor. The body comprises a sheet comprising insulative cellular nonaromatic polymeric material configured to provide a means for enabling localized plastic deformation in at least one selected region of the body to provide a plastically deformed first material segment having a first density located in a first portion of the selected region of the body and a second material segment having a second density lower than the first density located in an adjacent second portion of the selected region of the body without fracturing the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material so that a predetermined insulative characteristic is maintained in the body. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric materials comprises a polypropylene base resin having a high melt strength, a polypropylene homopolymer resin, at least one nucleation agent, and gas means for expanding the resins to reduce density.

Compositions, methods, and apparatus for manufacturing sheets having a highly inorganically filled matrix. Suitable inorganically filled mixtures are prepared by mixing together an organic polymer binder, water, one or more aggregate materials, fibers, and optional admixtures in the correct proportions in order to form a sheet which has the desired performance criteria. The inorganically filled mixtures are formed into sheets by first extruding the mixtures and then passing the extruded materials between a set of rollers. The rolled sheets are dried in an accelerated manner to form a substantially hardened sheet, such as by heated rollers and/or a drying chamber. The inorganically filled sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets presently made from traditional materials like paper, paperboard, polystyrene, plastic, or metal. Such sheets can be cut, rolled, pressed, scored, perforated, folded, and glued to fashion articles from the sheets. They have especial utility in the mass production of containers, particularly food and beverage containers.
