FIELD: package. SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a packaging unit for hygienic articles, wherein the unit is made of a sheet of material having an inner surface and an outer surface. Inner surface comprises an edge zone comprising an inner edge portion and an outer edge portion. Sheet has at least one folding axis dividing the sheet into a first region and a second region. One of the inner edge portion and the outer edge portion of the edge zone of the first region is provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is re-sealable, and the other of the inner edge portion and the outer edge portion of the edge zone of the first region is adhesive-free. Additionally, one of the inner edge portion and the outer edge portion of the edge zone of the second zone is provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is re-sealable, and the other of the inner edge portion and the outer edge portion of the edge zone of the second zone is adhesive-free in addition to the edge zone of the first zone. Thus, when the sheet is folded around the folding axis, the edge portion holding the adhesive in the first zone is brought into contact with the edge zone adhesive-free in the second zone, and the edge zone with the adhesive in the second zone is brought into contact with the adhesive-free edge zone in the first zone. Further, at least a section of the adhesive-free edge portion in at least one of the first and second zones is provided with a release agent. A measuring gauge constructed of a transparent "L" shaped body having an elongated first arm and a second shorter arm disposed at 90 degrees to the first and defining a notch therein which forms a triangle with the first leg of the triangle angularly disposed with respect to the outer edge of the second arm. A plurality of indicia are carried by the two legs of the gauge. The indicia each include a center band sandwiched between outer bands with the inner and outer bands being of contrasting colors. The side edges of the gauge are inserted between the flaps and back panels of the envelope into engagement with a gum line and a depth of penetration is observed by determining the intersection of an edge of the envelope with the indicium along a side edge of the gauge thereby determining whether or not the envelope is in or out of specification.

Multiple sections of thermoplastic film are layered on top of themselves to form a multi-layer portion of the thermoplastic film. The multi-layer portion may then be conglomerated into a unitary thicker portion of the film that can then be shaped into a closure strip. Paper bags, making. -Relates to a machine for making lined flat bags in which four formers or mould-plates 1 are rotated intermittently in an horizontal plane by means of a vertical shaft 50. The invention consists in hinging the formers 1 to the central support 5 in order that they may be raised, as shown in dotted lines, to pass over the various folding-tools &c., which are arranged in the track of these formers. Each former 1 is rigidly fixed to one arm of an angular hinge-piece 56, which is pivoted on a spindle 4 on the support 5, the other arm of the hinge 56 having a roller 12 which is kept in contact with the edge of a disk 16 by means of a spring 6. At two diametrically opposite positions, segments 15 of the disk can be moved inwards and outwards by levers 18 operated from a cam 59. When the segments are moved inwards, the formers 1 fall to the positions shown in full lines to receive a blank; but when the segments are moved outwards so that their edges form a continuation of the periphery of the disk 16, the formers swing upwards to the positions shown in dotted lines and the mechanism is free to rotate. At two other diametrically opposite positions, recesses in the disk 15 permit the formers to swing downwards for the bag to be operated on.

The device may be such that it can apply either self-adhesive or moistenable adhesive to envelopes delivered by a machine which can only produce envelopes with ungummed flaps, Figs. 1-3 (not shown). Alternatively, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the machine may be one which normally produces envelopes whose flaps have moistenable adhesive layers, the finished envelopes being stacked by a slotted wheel 112 at 115. However, when combined with the device referred to above, which in this case applies self-adhesive layers, the normal flap-gumming mechanism 106 is made inoperative, and the envelopes by-pass the wheel 112 to be passed, flap first, to the device by a suction roller 9. The direction of movement of the envelopes is reversed and they are drawn past a fixed projection associated with a roller 11 to open the flaps, Fig. 6 (not shown). The adhesive layers are applied at 19, the envelopes are then decelerated so that they become staggered and overlapping, and the staggered envelopes are dried by warm air from a duct 40 prior to stacking with their flaps open. In the other embodiment, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the envelopes can be stacked with their flaps either open or closed. In both embodiments the adhesive layers are spaced from the edges of the envelope flaps and bodies.

Envelopes, making.- In a machine for making envelopes of the kind shown in Fig. 30, a web of paper E, Fig. 6, passes between rollers 13, 14 and is scored at its side along a line 18, 19, Fig. 28, by knives carried by the upper roller. The pieces e are removed from the web by fingers 30, Fig. 2, which hold the pieces against the surface of a roller 29. The fingers are pivoted to the shaft of the roller 29 and are actuated by fixed cams 32<1>. The removal of these pieces leaves the side flaps e<2>, Fig. 28, of the envelope projecting from the web, and these flaps are creased by scoring - disks 43, Fig. 2, and then folded inwards by twisted blade folders 48. The disks 43 are attached to a roller 44 which has a rough surface so that it is driven by contact with the web. Lines of gum are applied to the turned-in side flaps by projections 50<a> on rotating disks 50 and the web passes round the driving - drum 58. The drum has a roughened surface, and the web is held against it by a soft belt 59. After leaving the drum, the web passes under a gumming - roll 64 which applies adhesive b, Fig. 28<A>, to the closing-flaps of the envelope, and then beneath a creasing- roller 78 which scores on the web the lines e<5> along the top flaps of the envelopes. The web next passes under a roller 87 which is provided with two creasing- blades 89, 90. The blade 89 creases the blank along the line e<4>, Fig. 28A, and as the paper passes under the roller a reciprocating dipper blade 93 strikes the blank along this line and forces it between pressing-rollers 88, 97 thus completing the folding of the envelope. The expandable tool is made in the form of a separated tool; with that, on one lever there installed are two plates or rods, between which there is such a distance that the clamping device projects into the expandable tool or can pass through it without any collision with it; the expandable tool is borne at translational movement in the transportation direction against the inner side of the hose housing of the bag. Disclosed are embodiments of a volume control storage bag and methods of making same. The volume control storage bag may have first and second sidewalls, a double-locking closure mechanism with a first closure element extending along the first sidewall and a second closure element extending along the second sidewall, each closure element having a channel and an elongated member configured for interlocking with one another. A gusset is sealed along three sides of the first and second sidewalls, leaving an opening through the closure mechanism and defining an interior space having a specific volume. Corner seals may be formed at the corners of the first and second sidewalls, further reinforcing the double-locking closure mechanism for an airtight and hence waterproof seal. The volume control storage bag may be made of a food-grade polyethylene vinyl acetate blend, approximately 90% or less ethylene vinyl acetate and approximately 10% or less polyethylene.

Methods of making a container strip in the form of a chain of interconnected preopened bags with openings preferably having longitudinal dimensions of at least about 1/64 inch is disclosed. The container strip provides greatly enhanced facility for bag registration and opening during packaging operations utilizing the improved container strip. Processes of forming a chain of preopened bags are also disclosed. Face (14) and back (5) plastic webs are fed along individual paths of travel to a common path (28). In one embodiment the webs are differentially tensioned while in their independent paths by stretching the face web, by rollers (18) more than the back web by rollers (20) such that the face web will retract longitudinally more than the back web upon release of the web tension. While so tensioned edge seals are formed between the webs to convert the webs into a tube and longitudinally spaced transverse seals are formed between the webs to delineate bottoms of bags. Transverse lines of weakness are formed in said back web to facilitate separation of bags from the remainder of the web during a subsequent use. Tension in individual bag sections of the face web is released by forming longitudinally spaced transverse separations of the sections and thereby producing a space between each contiguous pair of sections. In other embodiments, pairs of transverse lines of severance are formed in a front section of the webs and parts between the lines of severance are removed to form the novel bags without the need for differential stretching.

A bonded unitized envelope stack, manufacturing apparatus, and manufacturing method are provided in which envelopes in a stack are inter-connected by application of two spots of adhesive on the front panel of each envelope to engage the lower panel of the next above envelope. In one embodiment of the present invention, a conventional folding machine including a seal folder flap trap is modified to enable the application of the two spots of adhesive on the front panel of each envelope, and to produce bonded envelope stacks having a given fixed quantity of envelopes. When an envelope enters the seal folder flap trap, a photocell detects and triggers one counter of a dual counter system. A first counter increments each time an envelope enters the trap, until a count termed "preset 1" is reached. When "preset 1" is reached by the first counter, the glue applicator is deactivated. A second counter is then incremented. When a second present count termed "preset 2" is reached by the second counter, the second counter is reset and the apparatus is deactivated. When an envelope enters the seal folder flap trap, the envelope stops and reverses direction, and two spots of adhesive from two glue applicator heads are applied to the front of the envelope near the bottom fold through two slots cut through the seal flap trap plate.

An envelope (11) consisting of a front side (12) and a rear side (16) which are interconnected by side flaps (19), has a fold-back flap (18) to which a layer of contact adhesive (23) is applied. The adhesive used is a strong contact adhesive which is effective without moistening or activation by any other means. The fold-back flap is laid against the rear side (16) of the envelope for the purposes of transport and storage, an area (22) coated with a parting agent being provided so that the adhesive can be detached before use . The envelope is closed by pressing the otherwise uncoated closing flap (14) onto the adhesive-coated fold-back flap. The adhesive is applied to the fold - back flap (18) by transfer, i.e. the adhesive is applied to the parting agen t layer (22) during production and then transferred to the fold-back flap when the latter is redressed.

A composite or so-called “half and half” bag has a first side wall formed from a synthetic resin mesh material and a second side formed from a synthetic resin film material. A reinforcing strip extends horizontally along the upper end portion of the mesh side wall of the bag. The reinforcing strip overlaps the upper edge of the first side wall such that it is joined to the first side wall through a horizontal seam positioned well beneath the top edge of the reinforcing strip to form an extension that protrudes well above (e.g., ½ inch to 1½ inches or even more) the upper edge of the mesh side wall. In order to strengthen the seam at the sides of the bag, the side edges of the reinforcing strip are joined to the second film side wall along at least most of the vertical extent of the extension. This film-to-film bond is considerably stronger than a bond through an intermediate mesh layer, as occurs along the remainder of the side seams of the bag. In addition, the relatively long extension provides an improved contact point for suction cups or other equipment used on automated bag filling equipment to open a bag during a bag filling process.

Method for forming flat bottom plastic bags

Flat bottom bags are formed from a supply of substantially endless plastic tubing, gusseted along two sides to form a flat reel. A sleeve of predetermined length is withdrawn from the reel and allowed to hang along a vertical plane between two foraminous plenum chambers which are then moved toward each other to squeeze the length therebetween. Simultaneously a sealing and shearing mechanism forms a transverse seal and cuts the sleeve length from the reel, the gussets being at the same time sealed in the seam. The plenum chambers are then subject to vacuum and are moved apart, causing the sides of the now formed bag to separate opening the same. Upon opening of the bag, a forming mandrel is inserted therein and moved through the length of the bag until it reaches the sealed end. Simultaneously a presser member is moved across the outside surface of the bag folding over the seam, and pressing the gusset portions into flat flaps and in addition forming simultaneously the flat bottom to the bag. The mandrel or the presser plate is provided with heat sealing means sealing the flaps to the sleeve sides.
