In one embodiment, the process includes the steps of placing a creped base web between a first moving conveyor (60) and a second moving conveyor. The conveyors (62) are then wrapped around a shear-inducing roll (64) which creates shear forces and compressive forces that act upon the base web. The shear forces disrupt the web, increasing the softness and decreasing the stiffness of the web. The compressive forces are localized at the areas where the fabric knuckles contact the base web, imparting a unique fabric-imprinted pattern to the web with limited caliper reduction. The shear-inducing roll typically has a relatively small diameter. In some applications, more than one shear-inducing roll may be incorporated into the system.

This type of steam injection allows faster corrugator speeds without sacrificing bonding quality. An adhesive slurry of water and starch granules is applied to the flute tips to form glue lines on the corrugated web prior to the convergence of the webs. The injected steam cloud directed at the web convergence line adds heat without promoting premature dehydration to facilitate proper conditions for effective cooking of the adhesive slurry to thoroughly gelatinize the adhesive. In some applications, dry steam is preferred because dry steam does not significantly interfere with subsequent dehydration of the adhesive gel during the formation of the initial green bond.

In one embodiment, the process includes the steps of placing a base web (38) between a first moving conveyor (60) and a second moving conveyor (62). The conveyors are then wrapped around a shear-inducing roll (64) which creates shear forces that act upon the base web. The shear forces disrupt the web (38), increasing the softness and decreasing the stiffness of the web (38). The shear-inducing roll (64) typically has a relatively small diameter. In some applications, more than one shear-inducing roll (64) may be incorporated into the system. Base webs (38) made according to the present invention have been found to have improved void-volume and fuzz-on-edge properties.

Apparatus is provided for manufacturing a wipe in a three dimensional form out of an essentially flat piece of material. The apparatus produces a blank (12) of essentially flat planar form with a pleat folded on each side. The folded blanks are fed by a conveyor belt (21) to an opening station (22). The opening station comprises a pair of movable pinch rollers (34, 35) which selectively grab individual blanks from the conveyor belt and feed them via belts (32, 33) to a pair of counter-rotating drums (30, 31). A sheet folding apparatus , comprising:a sheet transport system;adjustable folding members arranged to bend and fold a sheet fed by the transport system; anda control system arranged to adjust the folding members to set positions in accordance with information on sheet properties,wherein the control system is configured to store a table that specifies different set positions of the folding members for different bending properties of the sheets and is adapted to read information on the bending properties of the sheets to be folded and to adjust the folding members to set positions as specified by the bending properties.2. The sheet folding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the adjustable folding members is a stop member for a leading edge of the sheet.3. The sheet folding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the adjustable folding members comprises a pair of rollers forming a nip for catching and folding a loop of the sheet.4. A folding machine for folding sheet material into microfolds. The folding machine has a first series of rollers that imparts longitudinal folds to the material. The machine has a second series of rollers where each succeeding roller has double the tessellations as the roller immediately before it. Moreover, the tessellation height of the second series diminishes by half which each succeeding roller. Material leaving the second series of rollers is then fed into a final set of rollers. A first one of the pieces is a sheet of corrugated cardboard folded into interconnected, adjacent triangular prisms (which we sometimes refer to simply as conjoined triangle prisms) that provide a work surface. A second one and third one of the pieces are sheets of corrugated cardboard folded into conjoined rectangular prisms that provide mirrored (relative to one another in the finished piece of furniture) vertical supports that elevate the work surface above the floor. A fourth one of the pieces is a sheet of corrugated cardboard folded into a rectangular prism that serves as a support brace for lateral stability. The piece of furniture is formed by mating the slots of the vertical supports with the work surface to form joints. These slotted joints grow tighter as the vertical structural supports simultaneously wedge apart and clamp together the work surface's conjoined triangular prisms. A fibre-containing sheet comprising a folding pattern and a partly or fully folded sheet product obtained from the fibre-containing sheet is disclosed. The folding pattern of the fibre-containing sheet comprises a series of parallel straight fold lines and a series of zigzag fold lines. Each zigzag fold line has a breadth which is greater than a breadth of a straight fold line. The partly folded sheet product can be shaped into various complex geometrical shapes, including spheres and saddle points, as a result of the folding pattern. The invention concerns a method of manufacturing paper or board, the paper or board obtained by the method, and a method of producing a tray from the board. In a fibrous stock for papermaking is incorporated an amount of polymer coated fibrous particles, which even have a foaming agent such as moisture contained therein. A web is formed from the fibrous stock on a forming fabric of a paper or board machine, followed by pressing and drying to a finished paper or board. As the paper or board is sufficiently heated the foaming agent within the particles evaporates, causing expansion and foaming of the polymer coating, which adds to malleability of the board as it is moulded into a shaped article such as a board tray. The invention even covers production of doubly coated fibrous particles for use in said methods, the inner coating layer being of a foamable polymer with a higher melt flow rate and the outer coating layer being of a non-foaming polymer of a lower melt flow rate. 1.
