Aromaticity of 65-85% is preferred. The solvent may be liquid or solid at room temperature and if solid must be used with a diluent. The diluent may be a mineral or vegetable oil, an aromatic naphtha, C 1-12 alkyl benzene, benzyl biphenyl, or C 1-6 alkylaryl indane, in an amount up to 3 times that of the terphenyl. Preferably the chromogen is in solution in the liquid, e.g. in microcapsular form. Numerous known chromogens are listed. The sensitizing agent is a known solid acidic material such as an acid clay or an organic polymer.

CONSTITUTION: A high boilding point solvent is incorporated into a heat-fusible solid substance, in a pressure sensitive paper obtained by applying an encapsulated electron-donative colorless dye solution and the heat-soluble substance to a surface of a paper. The solvent has an average boiling point of 250W350°C and having a ratio of the number of carbon atoms in aromatic rings to the total number of carbon atoms of not less than 25%, e.g., methylnaphthalene, and is preferably used in such a ratio that the weight ratio of the amount of the solvent to the amount of the heat-fusible substance is 0.125W2.5.

A novel pressure sensitive record material suitable for use for high temperature reprographic equipment is disclosed comprising a sheet support carrying isolated droplets of an oil solution of chromogenic material, said isolated droplets being confined within respective pressure rupturable barriers, and, on the opposite surface of the same sheet or on a different sheet support, a coating of a acidic developer material effective to develop the color of the chromogenic material in solution on contact, wherein, the pressure rupturable barrier comprises microcapsules having a wall material formed from polymerization of melamine and formaldehyde, methylol melamine methylated methylol melamine, urea and formaldehyde, dimethylol urea or methylated dimethylol urea, with a copolymer of acrylic acid and alkyl acrylate; the oil solution comprises a blend of (i) a vegetable oil having a degree of unsaturation greater than 30% such as canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, or cottonseed oil with (ii) alkyl esters of fatty acids derived from transesterification of the same or different vegetable oils such as a canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, or methyl ester of oleic acid, and (iii) straight chain saturated paraffinic aliphatic hydrocarbons of from 10 to 13 carbons. The disclosed pressure sensitive record material is suitable for use in high temperature reprographic environments.

CHROMOGEN SOLUTIONS AND PRESSURE-SENSITIVE MARK-RECORDING SYSTEMS ABSTRACT Pressure-sensitive mark-recording systems of chromogens comprised of diphenylmethane derivatives in solution with selected diester solvents is disclosed as well as pressure-sensitive mark-recording systems comprised of (a) sheet material, (b) mark-forming components supported by the sheet material and arranged in juxtaposition but in unreactive condition, a chromo-gen, and an acid clay sensitizer for the chromogen, and (c) the solvent supported by the sheet material but separated from the sensitizing agent by a physical barrier which is rupturable on the application of a marking instrument to the sheet material.

A carbonless paper solvent is provided comprising diisopropylmethylnaphthalene, generally in an amount of from 20% to 100% of the total weight of the solvent. The solvent is combined with a chromogenic substance and is encapsuled into microcapsules. The microcapsules are applied to a sheet of material and a color developing substance is then applied to another sheet to form a carbonless marking system. When the microcapsules are ruptured, the solubilized chromogenic substance contacts and reacts with the developer to form an image. In a method of the invention, a by-product fraction consisting of components with a boiling point range of 200° to 400° C. are contacted with propylene under conditions sufficient to form an alkylation product comprising diisopropylmethylnaphthalene.

In microcapsules of the type used for pressure-sensitive, carbonless copy papers, having walls formed from aliphatic diisocyanate and diamine and containing a solvent mixture with a dye precursor dissolved therein, the solvent mixture containing a component which easily dissolves the dye precursor and the capsule wall material and a component which only poorly dissolves the dye precursor and the capsule wall, the improvement comprising the poorly disolving solvent component is an alkylbenzene having from 8 up to 14 C-atoms in the alkyl moiety; and the easily dissolving solvent component is selected from the group consisting of diisopropyl naphthaline, a hydrogenated terphenyl, an alkylated diphenyl, a diphenyl alkane, a chloroparaffin and a mixture thereof, the ratio of easily to poorly dissolving components ranging from 15:85 to 75:25 vol %, and being adjusted within this range so that a solution of the wall-forming aliphatic diisocyanate is just at the turbidity point in the mixture of easily dissolving and poorly dissolving components.
