A brake for a castor wheel has a U-shaped spring (17) set flat over the wheel and with the lower arm of the spring pressed against the wheel by a brake tag (35) slotted into a cut-out in the top arm. The spring is part of a fork pressing and links the forks. The whole fork and spring assembly is made from one part, with the brake lever as the other component. The brake action is simple and direct and the position of the brake lever is easily seen.

The double castor is fitted to a moulded central support via a simple axle stub pressed through the moulding. The moulding is extended inside the hollow castors to carry a crossbar (11) set under the inside rims of the wheels to act as a brake when the castor is unladen. When weight is put on the castor the plastic moulding is deformed slightly to release the brake bar. The brake is unaffected by any grease etc. picked up by the running surface of the castors.

An improved stopper for locking caster wheels is disclosed. The stopper comprises a push-button slidably inserted into a mounting hole in a frame for journaling wheels, a stopper rotor rotatably mounted in parallel with an axle at the push-button so as to be elasically urged by a recoiling spring in an outward direction. Stoppers formed at the ends of the rotor are releasably mounted in stopper recesses formed on the peripheries of the wheels. An actuator is formed at the middle part of the stopper rotor. A cam groove formed in the mounting hole serves to stepwisely engage and hold the actuator of the rotor rotatably and movably by the pressing operation of the push-button and the recoiling operation of the spring.

The invention relates to a control and to a method for controling rollers ( 2 ) mounted on a movable part such as, for example, a hospital bed ( 1 ), wherein one, several or all of the rollers ( 2 ) have a brake mechanism which can be set to a brake position and a release position, further preferably also to a direction-setting position, wherein, farther, all the rollers ( 2 ) can be actuated electrically and one or several or all of the rollers ( 2 ) can in addition be actuated manually, and W herein, furthermore, an additional roller ( 3 ) with a wheel having a travel drive is provided, which additional roller ( 3 ) is preferably movable between a lowered position and a raised position. In order to obtain an advantageous control of the rollers in combination with the additional roller and also to provide an advantageous control method for this purpose, it is proposed that the travel drive can be activated only when the rollers ( 2 ) are located or the direction-setting position.
