The heels are desinged to be able to expand and compress in a limited manner and before fitting have a larger diameter than the annular recesses of the rim, so that when fitted they are pressed into the recesses of the rim and thus distorted and cannot accidentally become loose from these recesses. Supporting profiled rings made of metal can further reinforce the application pressure of the heel in the recesses and limit its compressibility.

Parent patent described tyre designs with unreinforced concave sidewalls functioning in compression while the tyre is inflated. Here, such tyres have bead profiles which can be located in a channel at the boundary of the wheel rim, then positively trapped by compression between its seat on the wheel and an inextensible annular clamp having a slightly smaller dia. than the outermost flange of the wheel rim. Pref. the annular clamp is either a metal profile or a cable of twisted metal filaments, esp. clad in a matrix of a rubber at least as hard as the tyre bead grade and profiled to engage with a groove or lip in or bounding the beading surface. Positive clamping prevents dislocation of the tyre from the wheel if deflated due to a puncture.

This adjustment takes place as a function of the internal pressure of the tyre. Expediently, the binding of the beads is effected with a ring on which the tyre rests laterally on the outside and can be displaced laterally outwards for the purpose of releasing the binding.

Abstract of the Disclosure A safety tire and wheel assembly for pneumatic tires which includes a safety insert having an inner portion extending around the wheel rim base for clamping the tire bead toes against the opposing rim flanges and an outer portion projecting radially into the tire cavity. A band of resilient material such as rubber is carried by a circumferential array of bearing elements in a depression formed on the outer surrace of the core outer portion for supporting the tire tread with respect to the wheel rim upon loss of tire inflation pressure. The wheel includes a two-piece rim comprising a first rim portion welded to a wheel disc and a demountable rim portion mounted by the circumferential array of clamps to the fixed rim portion. A sealing ring is disposed between the rim portions for sealing the tire cavity for tubeless operation.

The tire sidewalls have bead areas (6) which are held in annular chambers (10), the axially outer walls (23) of which have an opening (24) to enable the sidewalls (9) to pass through. Each bead is held in a cylindrical axially inner area of each chamber and the sidewall in an axially outer area whose breadth increases to the outside of the rim. The outer side of the bead lies against the radially outer wall of the annular chamber (10). In a design variation the axially outer area of the chamber may extend into a third axial area. A trapezoidal non-pneumatic tire ("TNPT") is integrally molded from a stiff, resilient elastomeric material with particular specifications, to form a unitary structure comprising outer and inner cylindrical coaxial members ("hoops"), the outer being wider than the inner. The outer hoop is supported and cushioned by a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart, planar rib members (ribs) and a planar central web member (web) which connects the hoops at their circumferential center lines. The web lies in a plane perpendicular to the rotational axis of the TNPT. The ribs extend axially along the inner and outer hoops, connecting them, and the edges of the ribs lie along the opposite faces of the web. The ribs are angled in the range from 15° to 75° to radial planes which interesect them at their radially inner ends, and the ribs on one side of the web are angled oppositely from those on the other. A rubber tread is secured to the outer surface of the outer hoop. The coaction of the structural elements of the TNPT provides a load-supporting structure which, in operation, is subjected to continuous compression and tensile forces as it travels over the ground. Deformation and buckling characteristics of the TNPT are derived from its unique trapezoidal shape which results in an interaction of the structural elements such that the outer hoop is not pulled under the wheel as much as the outer hoop would have been, had the shape of the TNPT been rectangular. The trapezoidal shape provides the TNPT with improved "handling" characteristics in hard turns without sacrificing a "ride" which is surprisingly similar to that of a conventional pneumatic tire.

An improved clamping mechanism to secure a tire between a bead ring and a wheel utilizing a bolt is provided. The bolt has a ball seat that pivots within an enlarged pilot hole in the bead ring as the bolt threads engage in threaded section of the wheel, pulling the bead ring toward the wheel. As the bead ring is tightened upon the wheel, eventually the bead ring contacts a fulcrum on the wheel, at which point the outer edge of the bead ring is leveraged against the tire bead bundle and pressing down the tire bead to lock it in place against the wheel. As the bead ring can pivot within the enlarged pilot hole around the bolt, the bolt is not stressed. Further, the wheel comprising a safety bead and non-skid coating on the inner wall of the wheel to prevent the wheel sliding around the wheel.
