ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air spring for motor vehicles including first and second end members, at least one of which is a piston, with an intervening flexible sleeve forming a fluid pressure chamber therebetween sealingly connected to the end members. A continuous annular sealing band clamps at least one end of the flexible sleeve within an annular recess formed on the inside surface of an annular wall portion of one of the end members within an open end of the end member by compressing the sleeve material between the band and wall, and without deforming the band or wall of the end member beyond their elastic limits. In one embodiment, the annular wall of the end member is formed of plastic and is deformed outwardly but maintained within its elastic limits upon insertion of the band within the open end. The end of the sleeve is rolled over the sealing band and then the sleeve end and band are inserted by a press plate into the open end of the end member with the band compressing and sealing the flexible material of the sleeve into the annular recess. The compressed flexible material expands to seal the sleeve against the end member. In another embodiment, the press plate expands the plastic material of the end member outwardly upon inserting the band and a rolled end of the flexible sleeve into the annular recess of the annular wall portion whereupon the wall attempting to return to its unstressed state seals the flexible sleeve between the sidewall and band.

An air spring (10) for use in a motor vehicle suspension system is provided. The air spring includes a generally cylindrical flexible bladder (12) having a circular upper opening (18), a support unit (14) sealingly connected to the flexible bladder (12), and a unitary integrated top assembly (16) connected to the upper opening (18) in an air-tight manner. The support unit (14) further includes an installation fastener (52) for connection to a vehicle support brackets (78). The top assembly (16) includes a sealed body (34) having an interior open volume (23) and optional attachment components positioned on the body to connect the top assembly to a vehicle main frame. The top assembly further includes an optional connection port (28) adapted for pneumatic intercommunication with other air springs and an optional fill port (48) for connection to a pressurized air system.

The present invention relates to a bottom coupling element for an air spring and a vehicle axle, commonly called piston, comprising an outer cylindric element coupled in a cup form to a lower bearing surface or bottom, reinforced by inner ribs for increasing its structural strength. A rigid disc to which a clamping screw is welded is co-molded in the bottom and is provided to be connected to the vehicle axle. The cylindric element of the piston is coupled to a flat portion in the form of a mantle, which is in turn coupled to a projecting portion thereby defining a ring arrangement on which can be tightly engaged an edge of an elastomeric membrane. The piston is made as a single-piece of practically constant thickness, from a plastics material and is so designed as to exploit the overall volume of the piston.

Eine konstruktiv vereinfachte Fahrzeugstarrachse (8) wird gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung dadurch angegeben, dass ein sich zwischen den beiden Längslenkern (12) erstreckender Achskörperabschnitt (10) ein sich daran anschließender Längslenker (12) und die dem Längslenker (12) zugeordnete Federkonsole (14) durch zwei miteinander verbundene Schalenelemente (4, 6) gebildet sind, die zwischen sich einen Hohlkörper (26) ausbilden. Nach einem nebengeordneten Aspekt der vorliegenden Erfindung ist die Federkonsole (14) durch ein unteres Schalenelement (4) eines sich zwischen den beiden Längslenkern (12) erstreckenden Achskörperabschnitt (10) ausbildenden Hohlkörpers (26) ausgebildet und die Federkonsole (14) ist so angeordnet, dass der auf der Federkonsole (14) montierte Luftfederbalg von der Mittellängsachse (A) des Achskörperabschnitts (10) durchsetzt ist.
