A differential centre bypass, for a four wheel drive vehicle, has an input attached to an output shaft of an engine and an output drive shaft which drives a rear differential through a clutch and a primary gearbox. Another output of the differential bypass drives a front differential through a secondary gearbox. Recombination of the outputs of the bypass differential may be achieved using wheels of the vehicle or this could be achieved using (bevel) cogs. On selecting reverse the secondary gearbox should switch into reverse as well as the primary gearbox. This results in a front:rear torque of -50:-50, or matching the weights over axles. The simplest embodiment is to electrically change the secondary gearbox, based on reversing light circuitry. The primary gearbox, secondary gearbox and cogs may be housed within a casing of the bypass differential and traction control between axles may be augmented using a braking system. The front and rear differentials may be may be non-slip or limited-slip while the bypass differential is free.

A drive system for a vehicle having a set of front wheels and a set of rear wheels drivable from a source of power includes a transfer case having first and second operating states, a front drive mechanism having corresponding first and second operating states and a control system which can be actuated to change the operating mode of the vehicle drive system between a two-wheel drive mode and a four-wheel drive mode by changing the operating states of the transfer case and the drive assembly in proper sequence. The transfer case includes a conventional interaxle differential to permit general vehicle operation in the four-wheel drive mode. The transfer case also includes a chain and sprocket assembly which can be selectively engaged to control the transfer of drive torque to the front wheels. The engagement of the chain and sprocket assembly is controlled by a shiftable clutch collar within the transfer case. The front drive mechanism includes a front axle differential which interconnects a pair of shaft assemblies. One of the shaft assemblies includes an axle shaft having inner and outer sections which are selectively coupled by a second shiftable clutch collar. Both of the clutch collars are shifted by means of vacuum motors which are interconnected to shift the clutch collars in the proper sequence. Actuation of the vacuum motors is under operator control through a vacuum switch. In changing from the two-wheel drive mode to the four-wheel drive mode, the front axle vacuum motor is first actuated to couple the inner and outer sections of the axle shaft, and then the transfer case vacuum motor is actuated to transfer drive torque to the front wheels through the chain and sprocket assembly. The order is reversed in changing from the four-wheel drive mode to the two-wheel drive mode.

A limiting differential comprises first and second planetary pinions 23, 24 having helical teeth with different helix angles which produces thrust forces that generates a differential limiting torque between left and right drive axles 8, 11. The first pinion 23 meshes with first sun gear 21 which receives an input torque from final drive gear 6 via final driven gear 16 and differential case 18. This torque is transmitted to, for example, drive shaft 8 by second sun gear 22 which is meshed with second pinion 24 that is integrally connected to first pinion 23 and thereby to first sun gear 21. A carrier 20 is coupled to the first and second pinions 23, 24, via member 27, so that torque is conveyed to drive shaft 11. Thrust washers 25, 26 and 29 are provided for supporting the trust loads acting between the various components, eg the member 27 and carrier 20. The differential may also be employed in a central differential to limit torque distribution between front and rear wheels of a vehicle (see fig 14).

A coupling 11, eg for a limited slip differential of a four wheel drive vehicle, comprises a rotational disc 22 and a pumping member 23 having control apertures (31, 33, fig 3a) which, depending upon the direction of relative rotation between housing 14 and hub 24, either connects a groove 37 with pressurized chamber 21 or with reservoir having a piston 27. The groove 37 generates a pressure, as a result of shearing forces in a viscous fluid, that is applied to piston 19 which via pressure plate 18 loads friction plates 15, 17. A stop 41 engaging a groove 42 ensures that member 23 is rotatable relative to housing 20 only to a limited extent, thus allowing the apertures (31, 33, fig 3a) either to be connected to a channel (43, figs 5a, 5b) or a passage (30, 32, figs 5a, 5c) or both (fig 4). This permits pressure to be built up in chamber 21 when relative rotation takes place in different directions, it also allows a decrease in pressure. Springs 25, 28 are provided to counteract or balance the pressure in chamber 21 and O-ring 35 seals disc 22 and member 23. Several different configurations of stops 41, apertures etc are possible (eg see figs 6a-7c). A throttling bore (49, fig 8b), closed by a surface (51, 10a), may be provided. A differential drive assembly incorporates the use of two separate and essentially parallel output drive shafts, each receiving torque through separate differential gear clusters from separate spur drive gears, which receive input power, from a transmission. Each spur drive gear is attached to an input gear of a differential gear cluster and both gears are rotatably mounted on the output shaft for that gear cluster. The differential gear clusters drive the output shafts. A control gear of each differential gear cluster, which controls the output ratio of the connected gear cluster is attached to a worm and each control gear and attached worm are also rotatably mounted on the respective output shaft. The rotation of the control gears and worms is controlled by a worm gear situated between and engaged with both worms and rotatably mounted in the gear case on an axis perpendicular to the plane of the axes of the worms. The worm gear thus engaged with both worms allows rotation of the worms only when both worms rotate, and in opposite directions. The engagement of the worms with the worm gear as used in the differential drive assembly therefore provides: (1) control of the control gear of each differential gear cluster allowing transmission of torque to the axles; (2) control of balanced proportionate differentiated drive, by allowing the worms to rotate in opposite directions; (3) control of the dissipation of torque especially, using the irreversible drive feature of worm-worm gear engagement. Available torque is therefore retained, continuously proportioned, and utilized, that is, torque is never dissipated but directed to and used by the wheel or wheels (in 4-wheel drive) which can use it most effectively.

The transmission of the present invention includes a multi-speed geartrain comprised of an input shaft, a mainshaft, and a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling the mainshaft to the input shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios. The coupling may comprise a throttled planetary gear pump, a viscous coupling, or a combined friction and viscous coupling, which latter may be shunted across a bevel differential gear. The thermal element may act directly or electrically. In Fig. 2 the coupling is a two-element planetary pump in a housing 45 in a casing arranged parallel to the main change-speed gear (18, Fig. 1, not shown) of the vehicle, the output of which gear drives the rear axle propeller shaft (19) directly and also the input shaft 26 of the planet gear through a transfer gear (20). The housing 45 is welded to an output shaft 43 and sprocket 58 which chain drives the front axle propeller shaft (21). Splined in the housing 45 is a ring gear 49, meshing planets 33 on a carrier 28 splined at 27 to the input shaft 26. In multiple driving axle vehicles, such as four wheel drive automotive vehicles, drive is transmitted to front and rear differentials respectively drivingly connected to front and rear pairs of road wheels, a controlled third or center differential drivingly connected to the front and rear differentials and acting as a free differential until one output of this differential rotates slower or faster a predetermined amount than the other output, at which time the control acts to operate a clutch to lock the center differential preventing any further increase in speed differences. The control is sensitive to the speed differences, percentagewise, of the outputs of the front and rear differentials, and acts to bias torque in the third differential according to the derivative of their speeds.

An interaxle differential system connecting two driven axles of a motor vehicle comprises a restrainable differential and a planetary gear train, which comprises three torque-transmitting members which have parallel axes. Two of said torque-transmitting members are operatively connected to two output shafts of the differential. A restraining device is connected to the third of said torque-transmitting members. In an interaxle differential system for use in a passenger car, the restraining device is a controllable liquid friction coupling, one coupling half of which is held against rotation.
