The vehicle includes a charging port having one or more sensors for detecting movement of the charging cable relative to the charging port. A transceiver responds to the detected movement by transmitting an authentication request and receiving an authentication signal, which is processed by a controller and unlocks the charging cable from the charging port responsive to verifying the authentication signal. In an exemplary method, an authentication request is transmitted responsive to detecting an uncoupling action of the charging cable from a vehicle. Upon receipt and verification of an authentication signal, the charging cable is automatically unlocked and unlatched facilitating release of the charging cable. Owning an electrically-powered vehicle or plug-in hybrid requires the owner to plug the vehicle into an electrical outlet every so often in order to re-charge the battery. Present methods to eliminate this chore have shortcomings. A typical robotic arm used has multiple servo motors for manipulation in 3 dimensions and rely on a camera and image processing for sensory inputs, making the system costly and error-prone. Or, the driver is required to dock the vehicle. A method for controlling the method comprises charging the hybrid vehicle by receiving and storing electric energy, which enables a safe way of starting the internal combustion engine during the charging.
