Pivoting wheel regions provided concentrically to the folding axis and fixed on both sides of the back rest have a pivoting movement which is introduced via intermediate wheels into a counter element which is fixed to the vehicle body but can change position. When the back rest is in a position of use, the holders are fixed in position using a pivoting catch (13) cooperating with a counter element. A luggage compartment floor 2 for a motor vehicle according to the invention is composed of a front section 4 facing an interior of the vehicle and a rear section 6 facing a rear opening of the vehicle, the two sections being pivotable towards one another about a pivot axis 5. The step is formed, for example, by a folded-down backrest of a rear seat. The actuator may comprise an electric motor (14, figure 6), a threaded spindle (22) and a scissor drive (26, 28) which act to raise a cross-member (40) located over a substantial portion of the width of the front section.

A loading base arrangement for a motor vehicle has a rear seat with a back rest and a seat cushion. Furthermore, there is provided a base element which can be moved in the direction of travel of the motor vehicle and on which items can be deposited. A cargo area partition system for a vehicle includes a rear seat positioned within a cabin area of the vehicle and adjacent a cargo area in the vehicle. The method involves receiving a signal indicative of a state of a second component of the vehicle and receiving a request to move the bulkhead so that the seat is in a folded condition. The squab of the rear seat is moved into engagement with the bulkhead of the rear seat prior to moving the bulkhead; and movement of the bulkhead is commenced in accordance with the request and in dependence on the signal indicative of the state of the second component.
