An impact energy absorber member for a vehicle , configured to protect a lower leg of a pedestrian , with one or more integrated air guiding members for guiding air from a front bumper of the vehicle to a radiator of the vehicle , wherein the impact absorber member comprises at least one vertical flap that is reinforced by a rib that is fixed at least one of to the front bumper and a bolster frame of the vehicle.2. The front bumper assemblies may include a bumper reinforcement with a plurality of pedestrian energy absorbers positioned adjacent to a front face of the bumper reinforcement. The plurality of pedestrian energy absorbers are arrayed along a width direction of the bumper reinforcement. A plurality of bumper cover supports are positioned at least one of atop or adjacent the bumper reinforcement and may be attached to the bumper reinforcement. Each of the plurality of bumper cover supports is offset from the forward contact surfaces of the pedestrian energy absorbers in a front impact direction. Each of the plurality of bumper cover supports is more compliant in a front impact direction than in a vertical direction. As a result, a bumper cover of the front bumper assembly is more compliant in a front impact direction while being more rigid in the vertical direction.

According to one aspect, an overall airbag system of an autonomous vehicle uses a combination of sensors to deploy one or more external airbags in advance of a collision or as a collision occurs, for the purpose of protecting vulnerable persons. By using sensor data, combined with perception and prediction algorithms, an autonomous driving system may deploy a substantially optimal combination of external airbags for a given the size of a vulnerable person, vehicle speed, and/or collision timing. In addition to cushioning impact during a collision, the deployment of multiple external airbags may also control kinematics of vulnerable persons, as for example by addressing brain injuries in pedestrians due to rotational kinematics.
