The method may also include the step of asking a user of the motor vehicle 1 whether they wish to deactivate the affected system or systems and receiving a response from the user via a human machine interface device (display screen) 4. The carrier and object may be a cycle carrier and bicycle respectively, and the system to be potentially deactivated may be a rear screen wiper, a rear parking assistance system, or power operated rear closure / tailgate system. A motor vehicle using a system of the same method is also disclosed.

A rain sensor for an automotive wiper control system detects rain conditions to produce a rain condition indicative signal. The rain sensor includes a vibrator, the outer surface of which is exposed to rain drops and which vibrates or oscillates at an amplitude and frequency corresponding to the energy applied by rain drops. The rain sensor is adapted to produce the rain condition indicative signals corresponding to the vibration amplitude of the vibrator. The vibrator is resiliently suspended within a sensor casing by means of a resilient member which is adapted to allow vibration of the vibrator as rain drops hit the outer surface and to absorb vibrational noises transmitted through the vehicle body. A moisture detection system includes an electrical conductor disposed on a surface of a substrate. The electrical conductor has a resonant frequency that varies as a function of an amount of moisture present adjacent the electrical conductor. An oscillator outputs an oscillator signal at a predetermined amplitude and a predetermined frequency. A resonator circuit is coupled to the electrical conductor and is responsive to the oscillator signal and the resonant frequency of the electrical conductor for outputting a resonator signal having an amplitude related to the resonant frequency of the electrical conductor. A filter circuit rectifies and filters the resonator signal and provides it to an analog-to-digital converter which outputs a digital signal related to the rectified and filtered resonator signal. A controller is responsive to the digital signal for causing a system associated with the substrate to operate in accordance with the digital signal.

A method and system for detecting the presence of a carrier mounted on the rear of a motor vehicle or of an object carried by the carrier that may cause damage or a malfunction of a rear wiper system of the motor vehicle. If a potentially obstructing situation is determined to be present, the rear wiper system is deactivated to prevent it malfunctioning or being damaged by the obstruction. A user of the vehicle may be provided with a message that an obstruction has been detected and the user may control whether the wiper system is deactivated. The obstruction may be sensed by monitoring the amount of current drawn by a wiper motor, by an ultrasonic sensor, or by a rear-view camera. 1. A method of controlling operation of a wiper system for a rear screen of a motor vehicle , the wiper system comprising a wiper arm and a motor to move the wiper arm , the method comprising:detecting whether an obstruction is in an obstructing position expected to obstruct motion of the wiper arm; anddeactivating the wiper system if the obstruction is in the obstructing position.2. The peak light signals in each of the zones and a common background light signal are used to determine independent and separate control signals, which are then output to separate mirror drive circuits for independently controlling the reflectance level of the rearview mirror and the left and right side view mirrors, or alternatively the segments of a mirror. The logic and control circuit uses the background light signal to control the vehicle lighting system. The logic and control circuit also determines a vehicle intrusion condition if there is movement within the vehicle in a vehicle intrusion detection mode of the vehicle interior monitoring system. The control is operable to identify at least one object of interest in the field of view by a spectral signature and/or a geometric organization of the object. The control is operable to control a headlamp of the motor vehicle in response to identifying the object as being at least one of a headlamp of another vehicle, a taillight of another vehicle, a traffic sign, a lane marker and a traffic light. The control may be operable to identify a headlamp and/or taillight of another vehicle in response to light sensed by the imaging array sensor during different exposure periods of the imaging array sensor.

A display system is viewable by a driver of the vehicle. The display system displays a rearward image output of the image capture device. A graphic overlay is superimposed on the rearward image when the gear actuator of the vehicle selects a reverse gear. The graphic overlay may include indicia of the anticipated path of travel of the vehicle. The graphic overlay may be disabled when the gear actuator of the vehicle is not in reverse gear.

The control is operable to control a headlamp of the vehicle in response to identification of at least one of a headlamp of another vehicle and a taillight of another vehicle and in response to the activity level. The control may be operable to process the captured images to detect lane markers or precipitation in the field of view and may control a steering system of the vehicle or a wiper motor of the vehicle in response to such image processing.

A vision system for a vehicle is provided that comprises a vehicle equipped with an image capture device. The image capture device captures an image external of the vehicle. A display screen viewable by an occupant of the vehicle is also provided and a control electronically generates indicia that are displayed on the screen. The image external the vehicle and the indicia are simultaneously displayed on the screen so as to be simultaneously viewable by the occupant of the vehicle. Preferably, the indicia generated on the screen are related to a function of the vehicle that is not associated with the image external the vehicle displayed on the screen.
