394,482. Buffers for railway &c. vehicles. MITCHELL, R., 69, Kenilworth Court, Putney, London, FINLAY, W., 24, Mansion House Road, DOUGAL, D. and DOUGAL, A., 18, Hill Street, both in Edinburgh, (Representatives of Mitchell, J.), and COSSEY, J. C. G., Calbourne, The Vale, Golders Green, London. June 9, 1932, No. 16315. [Class 103 (v).] In a buffer for railway &c. vehicles of the hollow plunger and cylinder type in which the head f<1> of the spindle f is inserted from the rear or open end of the plunger b into a pocket a<1> formed in the rear of buffer head a, relative rotation between the spindle and buffer head is prevented by means of a suitably shaped plug, adapted to engage similarly shaped holes or recesses in the buffer head and spindle and preferably inserted through a hole in the buffer head. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 a plug h having a square or other non- circular end is screwed through a central aperture in the buffer-head into engagementwith a correspondingly shaped recess in the spindle head f<1>, the plug being finally riveted or beaded over or welded at the front to secure it and the spindle f against rotation. In a modification, Fig. 2, a filling-piece l of square section is inserted through a hole m in the buffer-head so as to engage the recess j in the spindle head, then the latter is moved to a central position in the pocket a<1>, while the filling-piece l simultaneously passes into a recess n in the buffer-head. If desired, the hole in the buffer-head may be subsequently closed by a rivet, while in a further modification, the filling-piece l may be inserted in the recess j. before the spindle f is inserted in the plunger, in which case the hole in front of the bufferhead is unnecessary.
