METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LABELLING CONTAINERS WITH AIR-BLOW SUPPORTED LABEL TRANSFER

A method and apparatus for labelling containers allows labelling of containers by wrap around labelling without applying an adhesive on the leading edge of the label. Labels are held on a label drum and moved into a label applying position while containers are fed into the label applying position. Air is blown from a first position on the label drum onto the leading edge of the label at an angle to the label drum surface and in a direction backward along the label from the leading edge to force the leading edge of the label against the container, while also minimizing the laminar flow of air under the label. After the leading edge of the label has engaged the container, air is blown from a second position on the label drum spaced from the first position onto the label and container at an angle to the label drum surface to maintain a laminar flow of air over the label and maintain the label tight against the container during container rotation. The leading edge is maintained on the container by wet adhesion or by air which is blown onto the label and container from first and second angled positions on the side opposite the label drum. Air can also be blown from a third position on the label drum spaced from the first and second positions onto the leading edge of the label after the container has rotated almost 360 degrees to maintain the label tight against the container during the final part of the wrapping process.

A method and apparatus for labeling containers allows labeling of containers by wrap around labeling without applying an adhesive on the leading edge of the label. Labels are held on a label drum and moved into a label applying position while containers are fed into the label applying position. Air is blown from a first position on the label drum onto the leading edge of the label at an angle to the label drum surface and in a direction backward along the label from the leading edge to force the leading edge of the label against the container, while also minimizing the laminar flow of air under the label. After the leading edge of the label has engaged the container, air is blown from a second position on the label drum spaced from the first position onto the label and container at an angle to the label drum surface to maintain a laminar flow of air over the label and maintain the label tight against the container during container rotation. The leading edge is maintained on the container by wet adhesion or by air which is blown onto the label and container from first and second angled positions on the side opposite the label drum. Air can also be blown from a third position on the label drum spaced from the first and second positions onto the leading edge of the label after the container has rotated almost 360 degrees to maintain the label tight against the container during the final part of the wrapping process.

A decal assembly (2000a) com-prises a backing web (112), a printed label (128) positioned on the back-ing web, an adhesive web (106) ap-plied over the label and the backing web, and a releasable liner web (102) carrying the adhesive web and ap-plied over the label and the backing web. The label and the adhesive web over the label define the actual decal. In a preferred embodiment, the la-bel is made from retroreflective sheet-ing. Labels printed with fixed infor-mation (126) are provided on a master roll. The endmost label is printed with variable information (126a), separated from the master roll, and then assem-bled into the decal assembly. For use, the releasable web is peeled back to reveal the adhesive web, the label, and the backing web. The decal (i.e. the label and the adhesive web covering the label) can then be separated from the surrounding adhesive web and the backing web and applied to a surface.

Water-activatable, linerless adhesive articles and related methods are described. The adhesive articles utilize a dry, non-tacky protective layer for protecting the adhesive layer from contamination and therefore do not require a release liner. The protective layer includes at least one of amorphous polyvinyl alcohol and poly(ethylene oxide). The adhesive articles are bonded to a substrate by applying a polar solvent, such as water, to the protective layer, which mix to form a tacky material. The present Invention discloses two robot assisted automated methods for application of decals on complex 3 dimensional surfaces without wrinkle and bubble. The method includes loading of objects having 3D surfaces on an object holding fixture manually from a conveyor belt, picking up a first application fixture automatically by a robot, peeling off the liner disposed on the decal manually and placing the decal on the first application fixture which holds the decal by suction, positioning the decal with exposed adhesive accurately on a first 3D surface of the object and switching off the suction automatically leaving the decal placed on the 3D surface of the object, placing the first application fixture back and picking up a second application fixture automatically by the robot for squeegee application, applying the second application fixture to complete the squeegee application by pressurizing the decal. The first application fixture is configured to be programmed to hold decals of different shape and size and the second application fixture is configured to be programmed to identify the 3D direction of squeezing pad motion within each region of such decals to eliminate the bubbles without wrinkling. The second method uses a mechatronic pick and place mechanism for picking up a decal from the decal stack and placing of the decal on the 3D surface of the object automatically.

A portable test tube labeling device provides labeling and tracking of test tubes used in patient care. The device includes a chute extending through a housing. A barrel extending across the chute is rotatable within the housing. Spacers are coupled to the barrel defining a plurality of channels extending along the barrel and receiving one of the test tubes as the barrel is rotated. A printing head and spool assembly are positioned in the housing. A tape is coupled to the spool assembly passing adjacent to the printing head wherein indicia is printable on labels on the tape. A method of packaging an object , comprising:placing an object inside of heat-shrinkable film;sealing the heat-shrinkable film around the object to form a heat-shrinkable package;coupling a first portion of a label to the heat-shrinkable package such that the first portion of the label is affixed directly to an exterior of the heat-shrinkable film and a second portion of the label is not affixed directly to the exterior of the heat-shrinkable film, wherein the section portion of the label includes an identifier; andcausing the heat-shrinkable film to shrink into heat-shrunk film and the heat-shrinkable package to form into a heat-shrunk package;wherein the label remains coupled to the heat-shrunk film after the heat-shrinkable film is caused to shrink into heat-shrunk film; andwherein the second portion of the label remains substantially undeformed after the heat-shrinkable film is caused to shrink into heat-shrunk film.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the heat-shrunk film is opaque.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifier contains information identifying at least one of the object or the heat-shrunk package.4. Water-activatable, linerless adhesive articles and related methods are described. The adhesive articles utilize a dry, non-tacky protective layer for protecting the adhesive layer from contamination and therefore do not require a release liner. The protective layer includes at least one of amorphous polyvinyl alcohol and poly(ethylene oxide). The adhesive articles are bonded to a substrate by applying a polar solvent, such as water, to the protective layer, which mix to form a tacky material. The tacky material forms a weak, temporary bond with the substrate and allows the adhesive articles to be repositioned on the substrate. The tacky material gradually pools together at the substrate/adhesive article interface to expose the underlying adhesive layer. The exposed adhesive layer then forms a permanent bond with the substrate.

Labels printed with fixed information are provided on a master roll. The endmost label is printed with variable information, separated from the master roll, and then assembled into the decal assembly. For use, the releasable web is peeled back to reveal the adhesive web, the label, and the backing web. The decal (i.e., the label and the adhesive web covering label) can then be separated from the surrounding adhesive web and the backing web and applied to a surface.

The method includes loading of objects having 3D surfaces on an object holding fixture manually from a conveyor belt, picking up a first application fixture automatically by a robot, peeling off the liner disposed on the decal manually and placing the decal on the first application fixture which holds the decal by suction, positioning the decal with exposed adhesive accurately on a first 3D surface of the object and switching off the suction automatically leaving the decal placed on the 3D surface of the object, placing the first application fixture back and picking up a second application fixture automatically by the robot for squeegee application, applying the second application fixture to complete the squeegee application by pressurizing the decal. The first application fixture is configured to be programmed to hold decals of different shape and size and the second application fixture is configured to be programmed to identify the 3D direction of squeezing pad motion within each region of such decals to eliminate the bubbles without wrinkling. The second method uses a mechatronic pick and place mechanism for picking up a decal from the decal stack and placing of the decal on the 3D surface of the object automatically.

This new operation applies wrap-around labels to cylindrical or prismatic vessels. A length corresponding to the pattern repeat, is cut from a printed plastic band of labels, to be stretched. The material is reversibly-extensible, and is not taken beyond the limit of reversibility. Stretching immediately precedes application. The label is given a continuous, or repeat-of-pattern coating of adhesive, especially hot-melt adhesive. It is wrapped around the vessel with overlap. Adhesion takes place through reaction and/or heating. The label retracts, to rest against the vessel exterior, but not before adhesion is substantially complete. In this novel process, adhesive application takes place immediately before labelling, i.e. after cutting, and before, during or after stretching.

The label surface sectors are wrapped into place by the rotating bottles and are pressed home during this, using the bottle movement to the successive label surface sectors. The endless conveyor belts (13,14,18) used to feed, allocate and collate the bottles and their label sectors are preceded upstream by a heater (4), using heated pressing elements (34) addressed to the bottles rotating on their conveyors. Bottles rotating alternate ways on one sector of the infeed belt (13) are addressed in their neck area with blockable pressure rollers. In the conveying direction (12), successive peripheral bottle sectors are allocated one conveyor (14) to feed single label sectors (16) in the body area (30) and a conveyor (18) to bring in other single label sectors in the neck region of the bottles.

A method and apparatus for labeling containers allows labeling of containers by wrap around labeling without applying an adhesive on the leading edge of the label. Labels are held on a label drum and moved into a label applying position while containers are fed into the label applying position. Air is blown from the label drum onto the leading edge of the label at an angle to the label drum surface and in a direction backward along the label from the leading edge to force the leading edge of the label against the container. The leading edge is maintained on the container by wet adhesion or by air which is blown onto the label and container from the side opposite the label drum.
