Carton and stress relieving pattern for handle

A carton blank is assembled into a carton for beverage containers, the blank having a number of panels including a top panel, a bottom panel and a pair of side panels each joined by a fold line to an adjacent one of the panels. A number of end flaps are each joined by an end flap fold line to one of the panels and the end flaps are adapted to be folded upon selected other end flaps to form composite end panels of the carton. A carrying handle is formed in a selected one of the panels and adapted to be grasped by a user to carry the erected carton filled with the beverage containers. A pattern of stress-relieving lines are formed in the carton blank to produce a desired buckling of the carton when erected, filled and lifted to avoid tearing of the carton material.

A carton for containing a plurality of articles. The carton comprises a first top panel, a second top panel, a bottom panel, a first side panel, and a second side panel. A handle comprises a first handle panel and a second handle panel. The first handle panel comprises a central portion in the top panel and an end portion in a first top end flap. The second handle panel comprises a first portion in the second top panel and a second portion in a second top end flap. The central portion of the first handle panel is attached to the first portion of the second handle panel and the end portion of the first handle panel is attached to the second portion of the second handle panel.

Carrier and method

A carrier has two configurations, folded and unfolded. In the folded configuration the carrier has vertical walls and a base, forming a receptacle. The vertical walls are hinged together at their side-edges so that they can be folded together for forming a handle structure to carry the carrier and its contents, and swung apart to expose advertising copy, promotional items and/or books. Portions of the outside walls forming the covers can have openings to receive the necks of bottles to give added lateral support for the bottles. The vertical walls can be folded to create a handle, and swing apart to expose indicia; the motion used is like opening a book.

A basket-style article carrier having bottom, side and end walls and a multi-ply handle connected at its ends with the end walls is provided with improved transverse partition elements wherein a partition strip is foldably joined to one ply of the handle in conventional fashion and a reinforcing strip is foldably joined to the partition strip along the generally transverse fold line. A carrier is provided with vertical support panels, each with a receptacle extending outwardly from its lower region. Each receptacle has a bottom panel which unfolds partially when the folded carrier is unfolded. An engagement structure such as a detent is provided to hold each bottom panel temporarily in the partially unfolded position to hold the receptacles open until the bottom panels are pressed downwardly by an object placed in the receptacle.

Beverage carton tear resistant handle

Handle design for a beverage carton allows the handle feature to lie directly next to the underlying reinforced handle feature. The new handle placement affords tear resistance in that there is no single layer of board being carried by either the person stocking the product, or the consumer as they handle the package. Also, the new feature allow for an average person to insert 4 fingers versus 3 fingers, helping to displace and spread the forces that may ultimately begin to rip the top of the package. The current handle feature is referred to as a "racetrack" design as it is oval in its die cut. In prior designs, there is about 1/4" area between the handle opening and the reinforced panel that allow the single layer of fibers in this area to begin to tear. The handle does not completely fail yet the top of the package looks less appealing to a consumer than a package with no rips. This invention avoids any such tearing due to the placement of the reinforcing strip relative to the handle openings.
