The friction winding shaft is used to wind up materials in strip form onto coil cores (16). The friction elements (12) are movable outward in order in operation to establish a rotationally fixed connection between the friction elements (12) and the coil core (16). With the goal of assuring slip-free slaving of the coil core at a certain torque, it is proposed that the tension elements (24), by means of the radial forces they impose, move the friction elements (12) radially outward via the coupling elements (28) and put them in contact with the coil core. Under the radial forces of the tension elements (24) effective in the operating position, the torque transmitted by the frictional pairing of the coupling element and friction element is intended to be lower than the torque that can be transmitted by the pairing of friction element and coil core, so that a rotationally fixed slaving occurs between the friction element (12) and the coil core (16).

Successive sheets of a stream of partially overlapping paper sheets are brought into contact with and are entrained by successive increments of an upwardly sloping running flexible band which is convoluted onto a rotary core to form with the sheets a bobbin wherein the sheets are confined between successive overlapping convolutions of the coiled band. The sheets of the stream are inverted ahead of the locus where they reach the running band so that the trailing portion of each preceding sheet overlies the leader of the next-following sheet. This reduces the likelihood of shifting of the sheets on impact against and during travel with the band upwardly toward the rotating core and renders it possible to dispense with a flexible element which is used in conventional apparatus to hold the sheets against slippage relative to the upwardly sloping band and which is convoluted with the band to thereby reduce the amount of space which is available in the bobbin for storage of confined sheets.

A media feeder for feeding media items includes a moveable media side guide. The second drive means may be operated by movement of an operator operable member such as cover for a media elevator platform housing. The feeder side guides may be adjusted to the predefined gap by a method that includes the opening and closing of the of the media elevator platform housing cover.
