FIELD: physics.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of equipment for processing valuable documents. Stacker for valuable documents has a stack accumulator and a braking device. Corresponding valuable document is transported between the shafts. At least one drive roller is rigidly mounted on the transfer shaft. On the transport shaft there is additionally mounted at least one roller installed with possibility of rotation. Due to the rotation of the brake shaft, the eccentric roller is capable of engagement or disengagement with the driving roller lying opposite it. When engaging the rollers, the valuable document is clamped between them. During disengagement valuable document is not clamped between them. If the front edge 2 of a sheet 1 to be printed is not correctly positioned but not badly out of alignment, e.g. if the edge contacts one stop 3 and is one or two millimetres away from the other stop, the signal from photo-cells 4 does not trip the printing press as is usual, but allows printing to continue, the arrangement being such that the position of the mis-fed sheet is marked by a strip of paper (Fig. 2, not shown) so that after delivery from the press it can be removed from the stack of otherwise correctly printed sheets. If, however, sheet 2 is so badly positioned that it would cause the printing press to jam if fed-in to be printed, this mis-alignment is detected by the photo-cells 6 which produce a signal to stop the press.

A vacuum belt conveyor sequentially delivers sheet articles to a digital printer. The sheets are held in position by vacuum on the underside of the sheets through apertures in the belts and covered by the sheets. A plurality of independent plenums on the underside of the belt have chambers respectively communicating with rows of apertures extending along the belt. Vacuum is selectively applied from a manifold only to the plenum chambers that supply apertures that are covered by the sheets so that the ink from the printer will not be directed from its intended position on the sheet by vacuum from adjacent uncovered belt apertures. The sheets are fed to the conveyor in synchronism with the conveyor speed by a timed feeder so that the sheets are carried by the conveyor with a predetermined gap between the sheets and no belt apertures in the gap. The novel solution provides a method for feeding of individual envelopes from a stack of envelopes in a hopper for an inserter machine. At the downstream end of the hopper, a friction feeder serially feeds individual envelopes from the stack. A suction cup is selectively actuated to engage with the envelope to pull a leading portion of the envelope away from the stack to assist the friction feeder in feeding envelopes. Selective actuation is based on monitoring downstream movement of fed envelopes. The suction cup is engaged when the envelopes travel a shorter distance than would be expected based on the movement of the feeder.
