A method of operating an imaging device having a failed or failing media-full sensor determines whether or not a controller can trust the output signal received from the media-full sensor. A reduced power or intensity level is used to test the media-full sensor and, in particular, the light source to counter the dimming of the light source that occurs due to aging and electrical noise in the system. When the output signal of a photoreceptor is at or below a threshold value, the photo-receptor is considered to have not detected the light beam from the light source and the light beam is deemed not to have been detected even though the photo-receptor may be providing a lower level output signal. Thus, an output signal of the photo-receptor is not trusted and an indication that a media storage area is not full is provided and an imaging operation is carried out.

A print media detection system for use in a printing device is disclosed. An embodiment of the print media detection system includes a source configured to transmit a light signal and a sensor configured to detect the light signal and generate an electrical signal in response to the light signal, the electrical signal having a magnitude that increases up to a substantially constant value as an intensity of the light signal from the source increases. The sensor is also configured to generate the electrical signal with a first magnitude for a transparent print media through which the light signal from the source travels to the sensor. The sensor is further configured to generate the electrical signal with a second magnitude less than the first magnitude for nontransparent print media positioned in a path of the light signal from the source to the sensor. A printing device including the print media detection system is also disclosed. A method of detecting transparent and nontransparent print media for use in a printing device is additionally disclosed. Further characteristics and features of the print media detection system, printing device, and method are described herein, as are examples of various alternative embodiments.

An apparatus (100) for sensing the presence or an edge of a sheet, including a light emitter (103), a set of reflectors (101,102,106,107) and at least one light detecting member. A light beam is reflected between the emitter (103) and detector (110,111) in a repeating wave form so as to intersect a sheet path; interruption of the light beam indicates the presence of a sheet. False indications of the presence, absence or true edge of the sheet such as may be caused by sheet holes or edge irregularities are avoided by the multiple passes of a beam of light across the path of the sheet. A continuous cleaning action of the sensor (110,111) may be provided by the movement of the sheet over the light emitters (103), light detectors (110,111) and/or reflectors (101,102,106,107). The sheet sensors are useful in detecting and/or correcting sheet skew, misregistration and other potential sheet handling problems. Through the use of optic fibers (Fig. 5), wires or other means, the light emitter(s) and light detectors that may service a network of sheet sensors positioned throughout a copying or printing machine (Fig. 11) which may be centralized and otherwise assembled in efficient modularized configurations.

The method of the present invention provides a way to make rolls of high shear strength pressure sensitive adhesive tapes with a transparent to the core appearance in a relatively short time and without the need to subject the rolls to additional method steps. Moreover, the present invention achieves such transparent to the core appearance by sufficiently wetting-out the adhesive on the tape backing to remove microscopic air bubbles entrapped within the harder and less deformable high shear strength adhesive layers. The method comprises a rewinding method and is characterized by the use of a pack roll during rewinding to provide a sufficiently high contact pressure to the non-adhesive side of the tape substantially at the application point of the tape to the tape roll. In one aspect, a sufficient contact pressure is provided by the pack roll so that the pressure sensitive adhesive tape rolls are made with a transparent to the core appearance at the time of the rewinding step. In another aspect, the method further includes the step of aging the tape roll after the rewinding step is complete for allowing the tape roll to become transparent to the core after the rewinding step.
